Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to work on a project exploring contemporary relations between the UK and Germany, at a time when these are being significantly developed by both counties. The project is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

You will be working within a small team of researchers at Aston led by Dr. Ed Turner and Dr Carolyn Rowe in gathering data on the relationship since the UK’s referendum on leaving the European Union, and with a particular focus on current events. You will survey relevant literature and assist with the organisation and delivery of at least one project event (potentially in the UK and Germany).

The role will principally be based at Aston University in the heart of Birmingham (though some dynamic working is possible), some travel may be required. There will be the opportunity to work on co-authored publications (such as a journal article or a chapter in an edited volume) for the right applicant. You will also be involved in organising at least one event, for which sound administrative skills will be necessary. We additionally anticipate that this role would ideally suit someone with an interest German and British politics, and bilateral relations between countries. You should have at least an MA in a relevant discipline, and may have a PhD. Excellent knowledge of English and German is a prerequisite.

The post is advertised as full-time, but we would be open to part-time working.

Full details of the project are available on request from Dr. Ed Turner (e.turner@aston.ac.uk).

We would anticipate the role starting on 1st September 2025, but there may be some flexibility in either direction.

What we offer:
Aston University is a dynamic and vibrant campus located within Birmingham city centre, which has excellent transport links via bus or train.
Excellent training and development opportunities.
A generous annual leave scheme with 30 days bookable leave and a further 13 days bank holiday and University Closure days.
Everyday discounts to a number of activities and retailers.
Great family friendly policies.
On site gym and pool with discounted staff membership available
Further information on our Benefits and Rewards can be found here.

The salary being offered for this role is below the minimum threshold for required to sponsor new applicants to the Skilled Worker route. However, Aston University may be able to sponsor the successful candidate if they:

• Are under 26 years old
• Hold a PhD that is relevant to the role
• Have held a Student or Graduate visa in the last 2 years
