Summary

Clinical Responsibilities: The provision of expert care across the post holders scope of practice. Act as a role model and leader for expert nursing practice in the field of sexual health. This may be underpinned by an area of special interest arising from a Masters level qualification Establish, Implement and monitor trust guidelines, policies and protocols with regards to specific patient group. Make and accept referrals where appropriate in discussion with medical professionals to and from other disciplines. Work collaboratively senior medical clinicians to co-ordinate multi-disciplinary reviews and assessment Where there is clinical need and acting within legal, professional and organisational frameworks, to undertake to prescribe medicines for patients in the post holders care Be professionally accountable and manage a specialist caseload as part of a team. Exercise appropriate professional autonomy and make critical judgments in their field of expertise. Participate in the monitoring and recording of clinical outcomes through in house audit and quality improvement programmes. Ensure the practice of evidence-based medicine and promote the development of an evidence base in area of specialist expertise. Request specific and appropriate diagnostic investigation Undertake procedures as determined and agreed by personal area of practice Work independently as autonomous practitioner, with minimal supervision, exercising judgement, discretion and decision making in clinical care. Seeking supervision where appropriate and ensuring safe clinical practice. Have oversight of the compliance of the nursing and health advising team with any specific regulations for example: drug storage and administration, record keeping and data collection. Work collaboratively to develop protocols for integrated working, ensuring that outcomes are evaluated and activity is monitored. Prescribe independently and in line with Trust Medicines Management Policy for patients within own area of practice. Leadership and Management: Exercise professional and clinical leadership skills to promote best practice. Line manage and provide clinical supervision as appropriate to the role. Ensure regular and effective appraisal is in place for the nursing and health advising teams. Ensure appropriate nursing and health advising staffing across the sites working collaboratively with the Clinical Lead, through timely recruitment, ensuring accurate production of rotas and regular joint reviews. Leads and consult on the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies/guidelines/protocols relevant to specialist area and wider health care arena. Work with the Clinical Governance Lead to support on agreed aspects including adverse incident reporting/investigation and the management of complaints, relevant to their area of practice/expertise. Take a lead role in preparation for National Peer Review programmes as required by the clinical speciality. Act as a role model, to promote consistently high standards of professional practice. Ensure that nursing care is based on sound evidence and rationale within the department, linking with other members of the wider team where appropriate. Work across professional, organisational and system boundaries proactively developing and sustaining new partnerships and networks to influence and improve health, outcomes and healthcare delivery systems. Develop strategies to regularly review patient and user perceptions of the specialist area to facilitate the engagement of patients and carers in service development. To collaborate with colleagues who lead service and business planning with regard to cost pressures and prioritising. Work collaboratively with the Service and Directorate Managers and be Clinical Lead to manage the Nursing and Health Advising budgets. Education and Training: Lead in the development of specialist education and training programmes for health care professionals and other professional groups working with specific patient groups across the network. Identify and respond to learning needs of individuals and teams to develop advanced knowledge and skills Support the integration of theory and practice through formal and informal methods, including clinical educational opportunities Maintain relationships with University partners to support the aims of the profession and the service, including contribution to formal and informal curriculum activity Support colleagues undertaking higher level and postgraduate study by acting as mentor or supervisor Collaborate with Oxford Brookes University and other Educational facilitates working in partnership with the OUH to ensure that students and service needs are adequately supported and that Advanced Nurse Practitioners/Specialist Nurse Practitioners, Sisters/Charge Nurses and other senior nurses are involved in the audit and development of the learning environment. Liaise with PEFs to develop an appropriate learning/practice attachment for students providing direct supervision and training to students. Gain feedback from learners about effectiveness of teaching and training and use this to improve provision of education. Improving Quality and Developing Practice: Demonstrate a commitment to evidence based practice and clinical excellence and lead staff in the implementation of such practice. Support and facilitate practice development, audit and project/research activity within the clinical speciality, contributing to the continuing improvement in service quality. Raise the profile of the Service at a local, national and international level by contributing to professional and service debate, and through professional activity, publications and presentation at conferences. Uses professional judgement in managing complex and unpredictable care events and captures the learning from these experiences to improve patient care and service delivery. Provides expert professional input to appropriate health improvement programmes to meet the local agenda in line with the national framework To take a lead in promoting and managing change to improve practice, co-ordinating existing resources and developing links, locally and nationally. Participate in regular clinical supervision Ensure that appropriate support is in place for less experienced nurses Identifies own development needs in line with service requirements within personal development plan and proactively develops and improves own competence. Uses advanced communication skills and contributes to the wider development of those working in their area of practice by publicising and disseminating their work through presentations at conferences and articles in the professional press. To identify areas where investment should be made to further develop the service and feed this into the business planning cycle locally and nationally. Contributes to the meaningful development of public involvement in service design and delivery Build a culture of audit and research in practice, in line with national research agendas and priorities, and publish articles in appropriate journals. Develops strategies to regularly review patient and user perceptions of the speciality to facilitate the engagement of patients and carers in service development Governance/ Research & Audit Monitor standards of care and lead on the improvement of care through benchmarking/ audit/research. Demonstrate understanding of evidence based care, including where to obtain up to date evidence. Lead on the collection and collation of essential data items appropriate for the service. Lead responsibility on collating and presenting relevant evidence and documentation in preparation for internal and external assessments/inspections such as CQC. Work collaboratively with Clinical Governance Lead on the management of Datix reports investigations, patient complaints and compliments. Ensure lessons learned from incidents and complaints are used to develop and improve clinical services Attend and contribute to clinical governance and business meetings. Act as Nurse Lead on the in-house Safeguarding team, providing advice and support to Sexual Health team. Work with the Clinical Service Unit team to ensure contract management, data preparation and responsive to the commissioners queries and enquiries
