The purpose of I-STORM (International Network of Storm Surge Barriers) is to share knowledge and experience, to promote and improve the management, maintenance and operation of Storm Surge Barriers.

The I-STORM Business Support Officer (BSO) role will support the I-STORM Board and Coordinator with the delivery of a wide range of projects and programmes of work. You will work closely and have an active involvement with international colleagues, to co-ordinate and manage delivery of the Network’s events and key objectives.

You will be the main administration support to the Network, and help with the Network’s communication, finances, and data management. In addition, you will help our members access the services, products and benefits provided through membership.

Typically the I-STORM BSO role will assist with a range of activities such as:

• provide team administration support to the I-STORM Board and Themes (expert working groups);
• organising (international) meetings and supporting delivery and follow up actions and assurance;
• provide recruitment and procurement support;
• records management handling and processing data, setting up new project workspaces, managing and assuring access requests;
• collaborating closely with the I-STORM Coordinator to support members;
• coordinating the I-STORM Website and managing updates and access requests to ensure data security;

The team

The I-STORM Network includes members of storm surge barrier professionals from the Rijkswaterstaat (Netherlands), Army Corps of Engineers (United States), Venice Water Authority (Italy), Environment Agency (England), various Barrier authorities, specialist contractors, consultants and learned Institutes.

At present the administrative and co-ordinating functions of the network are retained by the Environment Agency so in effect, you will be joining the I-STORM Network as an Environment Agency employee and afforded all the associated benefits and flexibility.

Experience/skills required

A Levels (or equivalent) are desirable. Subjects that are particularly advantageous include maths/statistics, geography, engineering, English, environmental studies, business studies, economics and computer science. Other skills advantageous to the job description will include:

• Attention to detail to ensure tasks are completed on time and to a high standard;
• Good organisational skills including prioritising an interesting and varied workload;
• Experience in event management
• Confidence in using MS Office;
• Understanding how to collate and maintain accurate information and present it in a user-friendly way;
• Experience of managing websites and information in a variety of formats;
• Networking, engagement and influencing skills.
