The DWP Chief Commercial Officer’s Private Office is a high-performing, friendly, supportive, and inclusive team in a demanding but rewarding environment. It is an exciting opportunity for someone interested in working with senior officials in Commercial and wider.
The postholder is required to be an independent and proactive individual, who is adept at acting on their own initiative whilst making a meaningful contribution to the work of the wider team and supporting the Chief Commercial Officer (CCO).
The Business Support Manager will need to engage effectively and enhance CD’s relationships with stakeholders – including Private Offices, Ministers, Cabinet Office, and Commercial customers across DWP.
We are looking for a highly motivated individual with the skills to work effectively both as part of a team and independently, whilst developing key relationships with stakeholders of all grades to deliver the best possible outcomes. You will be expected to use and take initiative to drive results; success in this role will require strong organisational, communication and leadership skills.
This is an exciting opportunity for an HEO Business Support Manager to join the DWP Chief Commercial Officer’s Private Office.
As a Business Support Manager, you will work autonomously to manage the diary and inbox of the CCO whilst also supporting the wider Private Office team.
The CCO Private Office operates as a high-performing team within a fast-paced and demanding environment, where professionalism and efficiency are paramount. The advertised role is to work alongside the Private Secretary and Assistant Private Secretary to support the Chief Commercial Officer, undertake a range of activities, ensure the wider CD functions maintain effective business delivery and engage effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, building and maintaining valuable relationships; including wider commercial Senior Civil Servants (SCS), other Private Offices, Ministers, Cabinet Office, and breadth of commercial customers internally and externally to DWP.
The role is demanding, managing a heavy workload which is often compounded by reactive requests. The successful candidate will be required to have the ability to grasp complex issues at pace, be pro-active and an innovative thinker. They must be a keen problem solver who can maintain oversight of the bigger picture stepping into enough detail to know when to engage the CCO and his leadership team. Building respected effective relationships is fundamental to being an exemplar and the roles require excellent interpersonal skills and collaborative working with your colleagues in CD, DWP & Ministerial Private Offices, senior civil servants, Government Commercial Function (GCF) and cross Government Directorates.
As a Business Support Manager, you will work autonomously to manage the diary and inbox of the CCO whilst also supporting the wider Private Office team.
Key responsibilities (though not exhaustive):
- Manage the Chief Commercial Officer’s diary, reflecting priorities and using your own judgment to resolve clashes in meeting schedules.
- Manage the Chief Commercial Officer’s inbox, using your judgment to prioritise tasks and flag urgent inquiries for their attention.
- Initial point of contact for general queries ensuring detailed requirements are communicated quickly.
- Ensure the Chief Commercial Officer is fully briefed and prepped ahead of meetings, and that agendas and papers are received in advance of meetings.
- Booking rooms for the Chief Commercial Officer and making travel arrangements, as required.
- Organise Senior Leadership Team meetings, acting as secretariat as and when required.
- Contributing to the work of Private Office, supporting ad-hoc projects as required.
- Arranging effective cover within the team, to ensure appropriate cover within Private Office.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages to different audiences and channels.
- Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build trust and influence at all levels.
- A proactive and collaborative approach, with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
