Summary

This combined managerial and technician role supporting a range of undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes within the Department and the Harper & Keele Veterinary School. The appointee will be based within the CAHU and will have a specific role to play in managing the day-to-day running of the CAHU, supporting the delivery of companion animal-related teaching and research projects for the students and involving general animal husbandry for the animals within the CAHU. The Department has an expanding research programme, and the appointee will be expected to assist in this, complementing and supporting the current research effort.

The CAHU Team currently comprises of two full-time technicians, one part-time equine technician and one full-time placement student who between them undertake the day-to-day care of all the animals that fall under the care of the CAHU. This role will join the team within that daily rota, with time spent providing support for day-to-day animal care and teaching as required. In addition to the CAHU team, there are a number of Teaching Assistants and Veterinary Nurses that work closely with the CAHU team for delivery of handling sessions alongside and as part of the academic lecturing staff.

Experience/Qualification required
• Be educated to degree or HND level in an appropriate animal related qualification
• Extensive practical experience of companion animal, equine and exotic animal management and welfare
• Experience with team/staff management, budgets, health and safety, procurement, financial responsibility
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to interact at all levels
• Extensive applied knowledge of companion animal, equine and exotic animal management and welfare
• Ability to undertake manual work in the setting up and running of animal facilities
• Evidence of attention to detail and managing of others in the workplace.
• Flexible and prepared to work on a rota basis covering weekends and bank holidays, and longer hours during the peak periods.
• Ability to work both as part of a team and autonomously as the needs demands
