Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing team of expert and well-respected lawyers providing a range of in-house legal services to the Trade Remedies Authority (TRA).

We are a growing organisation of over 150 people, with our headquarters in central Reading. Our mission is to defend the UK’s economic interests against unfair international trade practices involving dumping and trade-distorting subsidies, as well as unforeseen surges in imports. We do this by investigating whether new trade remedies are needed and making recommendations on appropriate measures to the Secretary of State. This is vital work which makes a real difference to the UK economy and businesses.

Work here is high-profile and fast-moving. You will be providing cutting edge legal advice on the UK trade remedies regime, the World Trade Organization (WTO) trade remedies framework, and on wider public law considerations – including in the context of live investigations. You will be doing this as part of a collaborative and supportive legal team with a key focus on learning and development – working as part of and alongside multidisciplinary teams across the TRA and with a range of domestic and international stakeholders.

Your analytical eye for complex legislation, an understanding of the wider public and international law context and your exceptional research skills will be critical to supporting the vital work of the TRA.

Your main duties will include, amongst other things:

  • advising on the UK legislative framework under the Trade Act 2021, the Taxation (Cross-Border Trade) Act 2018 and relevant secondary legislation, together with the wider WTO framework on trade remedies;
  • conducting legal research for questions arising in the context of investigations, litigation and wider legal matters;
  • delivering high quality, prompt and accurate legal advice considering legal issues in their wider context;
  • working flexibly across workstreams and projects; and
  • contributing to the wider life of the team and organisation.

The portfolio may further evolve, so flexibility and agility will be of great importance.
