Summary


To transport conscious & unconscious patients between all acute care areas, including radiology, wards and operating theatres ensuring their safety and dignity at all times. To participate as a member of the operating theatre team, assisting in providing a safe and clean environment to receive patients during the peri-operative episode. To provide high quality patient care under the guidance and supervision of the senior nurse/operating department practitioner. Be responsible for the storage of medical gas cylinders and other key equipment, having first undertaken the appropriate training. To maintain all theatre areas to a high level of hygiene following infection control guidelines. Whilst you are assigned to a specific site, there may be the requirement for cross-site cover during periods of absence for safe staffing.

1. To assist with the transfer of patients from the acute care area to the anaesthetic room/theatres/recovery room, including x-ray department on all hospital sites according to local policy

2. To assist with the moving and positioning of both conscious and unconscious patients in preparation for surgery and/or treatment, ensuring that any intravenous infusions, drains or catheters are appropriately positioned.



3. Clean and maintain specialised equipment, reporting any faults to the appropriate personnel.



4. To prepare and physically position theatre equipment, furniture and operating lights in readiness for surgery and/or treatment of patients.



5. To demonstrate skills of time management and prioritisation of workload with support from a registered practitioner.



6. Develop and utilise good communication skills. Relay messages to other members of the multi disciplinary team promptly and accurately.

7. Assist the trained staff in the delivery of high quality care to patients throughout their peri-operative experience, ensuring at all times that utmost regard is given to patient dignity, safety, values, individuality, religion and confidentiality. Key Responsibilities

8. Contribute towards the creation of a welcoming and safe atmosphere for patients and visitors to the department.
9. Responsible for the supervision of junior/new staff and the induction of such.
10. Meet the relevant competencies as required by the post including manual handling and medical gas safety.
11. Be responsible for the care and transportation of specimens to the Pathology Department. Transport blood and blood products to and from the blood bank following local policies and procedures.
12. Remove clinical waste, linen and sharps within theatres and prepare for collection, being aware of local health and safety policies and procedures.
13. Where required participate in the on call rota for emergency surgery contributing to 24-hour cover for the departments.
14. Clean theatres, recovery and corridors as required daily, observing the Trust Infection Control Policy and take special precautions where required. Ensure changing rooms are kept tidy.
15. 15. Participate in additional weekly cleaning programme to ensure the required standards of cleanliness following infection control guidelines are maintained in the department.
16. 16. Clean and check theatre patient trolleys daily and between cases.
17. 17. Complete daily checks of transport and patient trolley Oxygen cylinders and replace as required.
18. 18. Transportation of scopes between the theatre department and clinical setting as required.
19. 19. Maintain a stock of medical gas cylinders, returning empty cylinders to the store as agreed locally.
20. 20. Maintain stocks of Theatre Scrubs as required and ensure stocks are counted daily to facilitate reordering.
21. 21. Report immediately to a senior member of staff any incidents, accidents or complaints involving patients, staff or visitors, and take any necessary action as instructed.
22. To be based with a specific theatre for the duration of a shift when required by the theatre co-ordinator in order to aid the smooth running of busy operating lists. This should include attendance of the WHO team brief where appropriate.
23. To assist with the unpacking of stock as required, including the removal of empty cages and boxes.
24. To assist the Anaesthetist and Anaesthetic Practitioner as requested
25. To assist the Theatre staff as requested.
26. To perform other duties as directed by Senior Nurses and Theatre Manager.
27. To demonstrate a personal and professional knowledge based evidence of learning
28. To be able to acknowledge limitations to competence and do not act outside these
29. To review progress with Ward Manager and Team Leader at regular intervals and throughappraisal process.
