Neway are seeking an Assistant Accountant to join our client based with Wirral MBC Start Date: 23rd June 2025 End Date: 14th September 2025 (likely to be extended)
Hours: 36 per week | Monday to Friday, 09:00–17:15 Rate: £18.25 PAYE / £23.42 Umbrella Contract Type: Interim (Agency Worker), Inside IR35

About the Role Wirral MBC is seeking a skilled Assistant Accountant to support its finance team during a key transition period. This interim role is ideal for someone who brings both technical knowledge and collaborative energy to a forward-thinking council.
You’ll be part of a dynamic team that partners with non-finance departments to manage budgets, interpret financial data, and enhance decision-making across the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
Provide financial guidance to non-finance staff on budget monitoring and controls
Support the preparation of reports, forecasts, and annual budgets
Analyse financial data to identify trends, variances, and opportunities
Assist in the preparation of year-end accounts in line with statutory standards
Maintain and improve financial systems and reporting tools
Keep abreast of evolving financial regulations and best practice
Support financial audits and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure effective financial processes
Carry out additional duties as required by senior leadership
What You’ll Bring
A recognised technical accountancy qualification or equivalent experience (e.g. AAT)
Strong understanding of financial management in the public sector
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
Experience working in a financial monitoring or budgeting role
Proficiency with financial systems and intermediate Excel skills
Knowledge of accounting standards relevant to local government
Experience with year-end close processes and audit support
Bonus Points For
Degree-level education
Knowledge of local government finance and systems
Experience liaising with external auditors
