Summary

This is a great opportunity to join an experienced team managing a 4,800-hectare upland farm on the stunning Lake Vyrnwy Estate in Powys. Managed by the RSPB on behalf of landowner Hafren Dyfrdwy, it’s the largest organic farm in England and Wales, home to sheep, cattle, and ponies. The farm delivers outcomes in sustainable land management, water catchment, and conservation. This role offers hands-on experience of upland farming at scale and a unique chance to build your skills and knowledge.What’s the role about?This role supports the delivery of livestock and farm operations, reporting to the Farm Manager. The Assistant Farm Worker helps ensure activities align with the farm business and conservation objectives.Key responsibilities:Support daily livestock and land management, including machinery, infrastructure, and estate upkeep.Assist with livestock care: feeding, moving, penning/restraint, ensuring welfare, health, and H&S compliance.Help monitor livestock health and administer prescribed medicines and treatments as needed.Contribute to habitat and farm management (e.g. hay cropping, fencing, ditching, vegetation control, water and estate works) to meet ecological objectives.Maintain accurate records for livestock movements, health, and treatments to ensure legal and best practice compliance.Assist with machinery and equipment use, maintenance, and basic repairs.Support development of farming objectives in the reserve plan and annual reporting.Help supervise contractors on small projects (e.g. pens, fencing) aligned with management objectives.Maintain good relationships with neighbours, graziers, suppliers, vets, organisations, and the public.What we’re looking for:Basic livestock husbandry skills, especially with cattle and sheep (incl. feeding, lambing, calving, movement).Understanding of grazing as a conservation tool.Developing knowledge of farm and conservation land management.Familiarity with animal health, welfare, record-keeping, and relevant compliance/legal requirements.Basic skills in machinery use, maintenance, and repair.Ability to build and maintain fencing/gates and assist with general land management.Confidence working in a team and using initiative in remote/lone working environments.Problem-solving and good personal organisation.Full driving licence which is valid for use in the UK.Additional info:Role involves lone and remote working.Weekend, early morning, and evening work required.This is a permanent full-time for 37.5 hours per week.
