Senior Direct Tax Manager
Circa £90,000 to £95,000 plus excellent benefits, including up to 10% employer pension contribution, private healthcare, and £6,000 car allowance (Work Level 4)
Manchester City Centre (Hybrid)
We're open to applications from people who may require flexible working arrangements, such as 5 days in 4 or 30 hours per week. You'll be able to discuss your flexible working requirements during the interview process and at offer stage.
We're looking for an experienced Senior Direct Tax Manager to join us and lead our Direct Tax team at Co-op. You'll be responsible for the direct tax compliance processes, tax accounting, and direct tax risk management, as well our direct tax interactions with HMRC. You'll also spend time supporting and guiding teams across the wider business, helping them to identify tax risks and explore opportunities, and making sure we pay the right amount of tax at the right time. In this role you'll work in a hybrid way - splitting your time between home and the office (you can find out more about our hybrid working policy at https://jobs.coop.co.uk/hybrid-working-policy).
As a Senior Direct Tax Manager at Co-op, you'll be one of the senior leaders within our Tax, Treasury & Insurance (TT&I) team - in addition to leading your own team - and you'll play an important role in supporting your colleagues' learning, development, and career progression. If you've got the skills and experience we're looking for, and you're open to working in an always evolving environment, we can offer you the opportunity to grow your career and make a real difference to the future of our Co-op.
What you'll do
- Make sure we complete our year-end and interim reporting tax disclosures for Co-op and its subsidiary accounts, within agreed timescales
- Use your knowledge and expertise to make sure our organisation's tax computations and returns are accurate and commercially aligned
- Make sure that all regulatory and reporting deadlines are met, including tax accounting disclosures and forecasted tax positions
- Be responsible for the maintenance of the Direct Tax Risk Framework and the operation, improvement, and documentation of internal direct tax controls
- Continually develop processes and controls to guarantee the effective delivery of Direct Tax compliance, including activity around SAO
- Support our FPAR and Financial Control functions with the provision of tax forecasts and budgets, as well as tax cashflows
- identify and explore direct tax opportunities and efficiencies including mergers and acquisitions activity and tax project work - liaising closely with leaders across Co-op
- Oversee our employment tax compliance, including PSA & IR35
- Be responsible for the activity of the Direct Tax team and support colleagues in their development and career progression
- Manage the direct tax interactions with HMRC and Fair Tax
- Join our other senior leaders (WL4) across our TT&I and Finance & Procurement functions
This role would suit people who have
- Significant corporate tax experience in a relevant role
- A CTA and/or ACA qualification (or equivalent)
- A solid understanding of accounts and accounting under IFRS, as well as a proven ability in tax accounting and reporting
- An advanced knowledge of corporation tax, as well as an awareness of its interaction with other taxes
- The ability to assess the commercial impact of changes to tax legislation and IFRS accounting
- The ability to extract, analyse, and interpret data, and apply the appropriate corporate tax treatment
- Good leadership and management skills, with the ability to support others in their development
- Good communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to translate technical language for a non-technical audience
We know that some people are less likely to apply for a role if they don't meet all the criteria in the job description. At Co-op, we're committed to building a diverse and inclusive working environment, so if you'd like to apply for this role but your experience doesn't quite meet every point, we'd still encourage you to apply. You may be just the right candidate for the job or other roles we have available.
Why Co-op?
If you've got the skills and experience we're looking for, we can offer you a competitive salary and great benefits package which includes 30% off Co-op branded products in our food stores (as well as other discounts on Co-op products and services). You'll also get:
- Private healthcare
- An annual bonus (based on personal and business performance)
- 28 days holiday plus bank holidays
- A company car or £6,000 car allowance
- A pension with up to 10% employer contributions
- Access to a subsidised onsite gym (at our Manchester HQ)
- Coaching and training to support your career development
- Wagestream - a money management app that gives you access to a percentage of your pay as you earn it
- Grocery Aid - 24/7 access to a range of emotional, financial, and practical support services for you and your family
