The Goods Trade Analysis (GTA) team sits in the Trade and Investment Negotiations (Goods) Directorate (TING) within DBT. GTA provides embedded analytical support to both TING and to the Goods, India and Gulf Cooperation Council (GIG) Directorate.

The team is at the heart of DBT’s priorities. We work extremely closely with policy colleagues and other analysts in DBT and cross-Whitehall to provide impactful analysis to shape goods trade policy, negotiations on free trade agreements (FTAs) and implementation of FTAs.

This role is in the Manufactured Goods Rules of Origin and Tariffs branch of the team. We work closely with policy colleagues to determine the UK’s interests in free trade negotiations with regards to manufactured goods.

The successful candidate will work as an embedded analyst in the industrial goods tariffs and rules of origin team. They will be responsible for delivering analysis that influences UK trade policy development for manufactured goods. They will have the opportunity to support negotiation teams in real time, including in the negotiating room. The team work across several areas and you will have the opportunity to develop a breadth of knowledge including on free trade agreements, tariffs and rules of origin.

The post holder is expected to:

  • Deliver analysis to shape trade negotiations on manufactured goods, ensuring UK positions of tariffs and rules of origin are evidence-based and provide the greatest value to the UK economy.
  • Develop constructive relationships with policy officials and analysts across DBT to support negotiation teams and insert timely and impactful analysis into decision making and build productive relationships across DBT and Whitehall to improve the evidence base.
  • Develop a strong understanding of trade economics, tariffs, rules of origin, industrial economics and the UK industrial base, applying this knowledge to help inform and support trade negotiations.
  • Help further the evidence base for trade negotiations and UK trade priorities through innovative analytical techniques and synthesise of external research and academic engagement.

The role can be based in either Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Salford, Darlington, or London. You will be asked to express a role and location preference during the application process. Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.
