Summary

The Defra group Reward team is responsible for providing an expert service to core Defra, Animal and Plant Health Agency, Rural Payments Agency, Veterinary Medicines Directorate, the Environment Agency, and Natural England, as well as several other smaller agencies and bodies - in all we support about 33,000 staff.
Reward is one of the most complex and challenging areas in HR, and the team consists of subject matter experts and specialists who provide reward expertise and guidance.

We work closely with our HR colleagues to deliver a seamless service to the business, working collaboratively on high profile projects and the delivery of critical business as usual activities, such as annual pay reviews and Cabinet Office reporting. We develop the strategies and policies that enable the business to recognise and motivate our staff.

It is a fast-paced environment and, to be successful, we need to respond quickly to changing demand and priorities while maintaining high standards and professionalism.

We are looking for a Reward professional to play a pivotal role in the development and implementation of our new integrated HR, finance and Payroll project (Synergy) and the development and delivery of specialist pay interventions to address recruitment and retention issues. This is a complex, high-profile project and requires an individual who is adaptable, able to prioritise effectively and takes the initiative, while being an effective team player.

The Reward team is a supportive and motivated group of professionals providing an expert service to for pay and benefits Defra Pay Bargaining Unit, Environment Agency, Natural England and several other Defra Arms Lengths Bodies. Joining us as a Grade 7 Senior pay lead, you will have responsibility for a portfolio of reward projects across the Defra Group, interacting with HR colleagues, senior leaders, managers, and others in the business, including the trade unions to develop and deliver change across our organisations.

As the pay lead for Synergy, you will be responsible for the development, change management and implementation of our new integrated HR, payroll and finance system (Synergy) in collaboration with colleagues across Defra organisations, across government, and delivery partners. You will be someone how is proactive, suggests innovative reward solutions, can influence senior leaders, deliver and negotiate change and is a supportive and adaptive team leader. This is a dynamic and varied role that will provide the right person with a great opportunity to further their career within HR/reward.

Alongside Synergy, you will be an integrated member of the Pay and Reward leadership team, supporting the delivery of pay interventions, annual awards and stand alone projects across our organisations. This will typically involve:

  • Implementing pay flexibility cases, pay reform and related policy changes in collaboration with our Shared Services, Trade Unions and wider HR staff. You will also collaborate with communications teams and business leads to land changes resulting from the pay reform
  • Be responsible for reviewing current reward practices and policies and implement improvements, ensuring they are legally compliant
  • Leading pay reviews for staff at all levels, including the Senior Civil Service and other senior leadership groups, leading on negotiations with the Trade Unions
  • Providing policy advice to staff at all levels
  • Leading the preparation and papers required for senior pay committees
  • Fostering and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders
