The Chief Scientific Adviser team provides scientific and technical leadership within the department, gives direct advice to ministers and officials and ensures that the department is able to draw upon the best possible research and evidence. Professor Tom Crick MBE is the DCMS Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA)

The CSA is supported by a team who coordinate and provide rigorous and robust, scientific and technical advice, and challenge, to the department. The team enables access to expertise through links with the UK science and research communities, and across government.

We strengthen the technical capabilities of the department and increase the internal skills base. Working with teams across the department to understand their needs and to enhance the ability to make use of science, innovation and research in their policy and delivery work. Including leading on secondments, L&D and the Government Science and Engineering profession.

The CSA works closely with the Government Chief Scientific Adviser, Government Office for Science and the Chief Scientific Adviser Network to work collaboratively to address scientific issues for the government.

This role presents an exciting opportunity to join a friendly, dynamic Chief Scientific Adviser team as an Assistant Private Secretary.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Prioritising and arranging the Chief Scientific Adviser's schedule and appropriately managing the delivery of efficient and comprehensive engagements including logistics and travel arrangements to support the CSA and DCMS science priorities.
  • Contributing flexibly to the day-to-day running of the office, including monitoring and managing the flow of email correspondence, making prioritisation decisions, coordinating briefing and advice and responding appropriately to both routine and urgent demands. Actioning and escalating following provided protocols and direction.
  • Strengthening departmental technical capability by increasing the flow of expertise to the department through schemes such as secondments and fellowships. Working alongside HR and policy teams to develop associated strategy, guidance and process.
  • Lead on corporate processes and ensure effective management: HR and resourcing, financial management, commercial.
  • Building strong working relationships with key stakeholders both within DCMS and other Departments, academia and industry.
  • Champion L&D and support broader departmental and cross government initiatives, including the Government Science and Engineering Profession.

This role will suit someone who is motivated and able to work independently. You will need to be comfortable with working in a fast-paced, reactive environment and have the ability to meet tight service deadlines.
