Summary
The ideal candidate is a natural storyteller with a passion for writing, and excited about promoting the council’s services to its 140,000 residents and stakeholders. You will have proven communications and media handling experience and be looking to take your career forward within a dynamic, friendly and supportive team.
The role is very fast-paced, requiring expertise across the communications portfolio. While there is a rhythm to the weeks, the days are often diverse with unpredictable peaks and troughs. You’ll be comfortable working at pace, juggling multiple priorities and shifting focus between different communications disciplines.
You will be curious, with a nose for identifying stories and a flair for generating content for a range of audiences using external communications channels, including social media, news articles, e-newsletters, web copy, and press releases. You will also have a key role in producing internal communications for staff and elected members.
Reporting to the Senior Communications Officer, you will build strong working relationships with internal and external peers, working with the team to deliver a multi-channel communications programme. This includes planning and managing the social media content calendar for Facebook and Instagram, writing content for regular e-newsletters.
You will support the management of the council’s public relations activities, develop content and media responses, as well as coordinate requests to film on public land.
You will take part in the team’s out of hours rota which includes observing evening meetings and weekend emergency cover.
You will have:
Recent experience of working in a busy communications role.
Strong storytelling and editorial skills; writing a broad range of content including web and social copy, e-newsletters, news releases, briefing notes and media statements.
The ability to take complex information and summarise it clearly and concisely for different audiences and platforms.
An excellent eye for detail, with the knowledge to proofread and edit with confidence.
Exemplary organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple campaigns with competing priorities.
A creative results-driven approach with experience of evaluating and reporting on communications activity.
A team player mindset, with the ability to develop strong working relationships.
