Summary

Applications are invited for a full-time Research Assistant for a period of three months, commencing in July 2025.

The project is funded by CARMA - Cellular Agriculture Manufacturing Hub Pump Priming Grant and aims to characterise edible mycelia-based microcarriers and investigate their performance in spinner flasks, facilitating scalability of cultivated meat from laboratory to production volumes. This will be done by studying the flow patterns during mixing of the mycelia inside stirred vessels, using high speed imaging and particle image velocimetry (PIV) experimental set up already in place in our labs.

As the successful applicant you should hold a MSc/MEng degree and have experience in experimental fluid mechanics. Applications are also welcomed from candidates currently pursuing or nearing the completion of a relevant PhD. Essential skills include hands on experience with mechanical characterisation of biological entities and investigation of their flow patterns inside closed systems. Strong organizational, communication, and teamwork skills are important, along with knowledge of laboratory safety (especially involving the use of lasers). Ability to quickly pick up new concepts and work with tight deadlines are highly desirable.
