Crynodeb

The Trade and Investment Negotiations - Goods (TING) directorate is part of the Trade Group, in the Department for Business and Trade (DBT).

Delivery Focused

The directorate plays a pivotal role in coordinating trade interests and leading the UK's trade policy for manufactured goods. We deliver and implement trade policy and agreements which reflect the needs of UK businesses, so that businesses can be successful and competitive internationally, whether with Europe or the rest of the world.

Expert and Insightful

The directorate is focused on harnessing skills & data valued by DBT and by other Government departments to develop and deliver trade policy that works for UK businesses. We achieve this by sharing our leading-edge expertise, brilliant analysis, upskilling colleagues across the department, and using our cross-Government insights to solve complex problems. Our directorate is comprised of experts in policy, analysis and international trade, plus a dedicated strategic support team.

Inclusive and Flexible

Our directorate is a great place to work and develop your career, while acquiring new skills through a range of learning and development opportunities. We take inclusiveness and diversity seriously and respect difference, as championed by our diversity and inclusion group. Wellbeing and work-life balance is also a top priority, as well as ensuring that the directorate remains an open and friendly directorate free from bullying, harassment and discrimination.

Collaborative and Open

We are committed to building domestic and international partnerships, and bringing people together, particularly external stakeholders, business sectors, and key players in the centre of government.

UKCA Policy and Strategic Delivery

Your role will be in the UKCA Strategy team, which is part of the wider UKCA Policy and Strategic Delivery team that sits at the heart of the directorate. The team is responsible for large parts of the UK’s product regulation policy and strategy, alongside priority work to support the smooth running of the directorate.

The UKCA Strategy team’s current priority is to progress important government legislation through Parliament, the Product Regulation and Metrology Bill. To do this, we work closely with colleagues across the department, government, devolved governments, and external stakeholders.

The UK Conformity Assessed (UKCA) team is responsible for large parts of the UK’s approach to product marking for manufactured goods, specifically the UKCA marking and recognition of the EU’s CE marking. This covers around £200 billion worth of goods annually.

The team’s current priority is supporting the passage of the Product Regulation and Metrology Bill, which was introduced to Parliament in September 2024. The Bill will provide new powers to make new regulations that support the UK’s interests. Much of the team’s work will focus on using the Bill to create a regulatory framework that supports businesses and protects consumers.

This role provides an outstanding opportunity to help deliver our priorities of supporting businesses and promoting economic growth. You will take on an exciting area of work, developing policy that supports economic growth and helps keep consumers safe.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to develop policy that informs decisions on the role of the UK’s product marking for manufactured goods. You will lead on determining a coherent UK approach for businesses, informed by engaging and with industry stakeholders to test and refine the policy, and influence other departments to establish government-wide consensus. At a time where the Government is considering how to reset our relationship with the EU, this role offers an exciting opportunity to help shape how the UK's approach to product marking interacts with the EU's framework.

You will join a high-performing team and will work collaboratively with a diverse group of people to deliver in fast-moving and often changing circumstances. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Bringing together expertise from across government and external stakeholders to support and influence policy development for the UK’s approach to regulating products, and to implement Ministers’ decisions on the approach.
  • Building and maintaining an effective network across government and external stakeholders to help advance the government’s product marking priorities.
  • Delivering high quality briefings, speeches and advice for seniors and ministers, adapting your style so the technical policy detail suits the intended audience.

We place a strong emphasis on planning our work whilst being responsive to emerging priorities, so you will need to be both organised and adaptable! You will be supported by a friendly team who prioritise development and an inclusive culture.
