Pay rate: £22.25 per hour PAYE
35 hours per week (Mon-Fri - 09:00 - 17:00)
Contract Length: 4 months
Location: Greenwich, London SE18 6HQ
Our client is seeking a dynamic and motivated Lead Officer to join their Environmental Services Team. Reporting to the Team Leader, you will manage staff and take the lead on key projects and specialisms across Commercial, Residential/Housing, and Pollution/Waste Management.
This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference in improving environmental standards, service delivery, and public wellbeing across the community.
Key Responsibilities
Lead one or more allocated projects or specialisms, including the development of policies, procedures, and performance monitoring.
Coordinate the work of assigned team members, ensuring priorities are met and high standards are maintained in line with legislation and Council policy.
Assist the Team Leader in the preparation of budget estimates and resource planning.
Prepare and contribute to reports and attend relevant committees and working groups.
Provide expert advice to internal stakeholders, elected members, and the public on environmental service matters.
Liaise with partners, public bodies, and community organisations to promote best practices and ensure compliance.
Prepare statistical and performance reports for external and internal use.
Investigate complex complaints, service issues, and potential enforcement cases, including providing evidence at legal proceedings or public enquiries.
Identify and address training needs, delivering training sessions where required.
Represent the Team Leader when necessary and participate in staff recruitment.

Essentials:
You will be a confident and capable professional with:
Proven experience in one or more of the following areas: commercial environmental health, residential housing standards, waste and pollution control.
Strong leadership and people management skills.
Excellent knowledge of relevant legislation, policy frameworks, and best practices.
Outstanding communication and problem-solving abilities.
A proactive, collaborative approach to working with internal teams and external partners.
Experience in investigations, enforcement, and representing an organisation in legal or public forums is highly desirable.
