Do you have experience of working in a school setting? Are you a confident, calm and compassionate person?
We’re currently looking for a Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) Practitioner to join our passionate Specialist team. As part of the Leicester City Council SEND Support Service, the SEMH Team support and promote the inclusive education of pupils with SEMH needs in Leicester City schools and surrounding areas.
This post is available for blended working so you’ll work both from New Parks House and hybrid. In addition, you’ll also travel to schools throughout Leicester City, and potentially the surrounding area. Core working hours are 8.30am-4.30pm Monday to Thursday and 8.30am-4.00pm on Fridays however, flexible working is applicable. We welcome part time or full-time applicants.
What you’ll be doing:
Outreach work in schools will form most of your daily working. This will involve supporting children and young people, individually and in groups, as well as supporting staff in developing their practice when working pupils with SEMH needs. Areas of work include observing and unpicking children’s needs, providing mentor support for staff and direct work with pupils such as developing social skills, self-confidence, resilience or emotional understanding. Your role will include working closely with parents, carers, school staff and other agencies to promote positive outcomes for pupil’s learning and school experiences. You’ll also travel to sites across Leicester to deliver training to groups of professionals and attend meetings.
Knowing the pupils needs well, you’ll work closely with the SEMH Teachers to assist them in writing reports and providing recommendations for reports including Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCP). You’ll support the smooth transitions between home and school, different classes, or new educational provisions.
You’ll receive supervision to support your work and there will be an opportunity to develop your skills in an area in which you have an interest, such as restorative approaches, positive behaviour management, trauma and attachment informed practice or therapeutic interventions.
What you’ll need:
As a SEMH Practitioner you’ll have previous experience working in a school setting, specifically working with pupils with social, emotional and behavioural needs. With this experience you’ll understand the barriers that SEMH children and young people may face. Your excellent interpersonal skills will allow you to talk confidently to colleagues, pupils and their families.
This post will be subject to an enhanced DBS.
What we can offer you
As well as the satisfaction of helping to improve thousands of lives across Leicester, you can look forward to a work environment that encourages a healthy work/life balance. You’ll enjoy generous annual leave, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and the option of flexible working. We’ll also give you the chance to develop your skills and expertise with a variety of training and development opportunities. In addition, you can choose from a number of flexible benefits, including childcare vouchers, discounts on city buses and trains and help with relocation to Leicester, where appropriate.
