We are currently recruiting early career midwives (Band 5) across our Ormskirk and Whiston Hospital sites!

At MWL we offer a preceptorship package with dedicated support, which provides post qualification experience across all areas of maternity and facilities a smooth transition to an autonomous band 6 practitioner.

The Early Career Midwife will complete a preceptorship programme rotating to all areas within maternity. The midwife will participate in high quality care for women and their families, also providing mentorship and professional support to enable students and maternity support workers to do the same. As a rotational post the midwife will have the opportunity to gain experience and maintain skills within antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care. The midwife works autonomously within Trust guidelines and sphere of professional practice with reference to departmental manager as appropriate. The midwife will work within their sphere of practice in accordance with NMC codes of practice and professional guidelines.

Our Services

Acute Care

Providing emergency and maternity services at Whiston, Southport and Ormskirk hospitals, and medical and surgical specialties across all our sites.

Primary Care

Providing primary care services at Marshalls Cross Medical Centre situated in St Helens Hospital.

Community Services

Providing adult community services for St Helens and a wheelchair service in Chorley, South Ribble, and West Lancs. Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation, freeing up space for more unwell patients. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.

The post holder is responsible for the assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care, both for specific groups of women as the named care provider and in supporting the care of all women within the hospital and community setting.

As a newly qualified midwife the post holder will be required to provide the necessary support, care and advice to women during pregnancy, intrapartum and postpartum period including care of the new-born.

The post holder will be supported to participate in their continuing professional development and

other development activities leading to completion of their preceptorship programme. The post requires effective communication and an ability to provide support for unqualified members of staff.

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring all care is delivered according to Trust Guidelines, Policies and Procedures maintaining contemporaneous and accurate records. By utilising clinical audit, research, supervision of practice and teaching they will monitor and improve standards of care by efficient and effective use of resources/ funding.
