About The Role
Physical Activity Coordinator - 28 hours per week
Enable’s vision is an equal society where everyone can live, work, and participate as active and respected citizens in the communities of their choice. Our mission is to deliver human rights driven self-directed social care, employment opportunities, and to build inclusive communities.
For over 70 years, we have been dedicated to transforming the lives of people who have learning disabilities and their families. Enable’s services are driven by our vision and mission. Our values - ambition, equity, challenge, impact and integrity - are not just words; we practise them daily, ensuring real impact for the people we support.
Enable Communities is one of the three pillars of Enable, dedicated to empowering individuals with learning disabilities to live full, active, and independent lives within their local communities. Through a network of youth and adult groups, advocacy services, and community-led initiatives, Enable Communities works alongside people with learning disabilities and their families to drive meaningful change. This includes campaigning for improved local or national services, promoting social inclusion, and fostering opportunities for individuals to connect, grow, and thrive.
Primary Job Purpose:
Activate is an innovative, inclusive physical activity programme designed to support young disabled people aged 11–18 (up to 25 if care experienced) in Edinburgh. Funded by NHS Lothian’s Active People Fund, Activate provides personalised one-to-one support and group based physical activities that improve health, reduce isolation, and build confidence.
We focus on young people who face the highest barriers to participation, particularly those with learning, sensory, and physical disabilities. Activities are co-designed with young people and take place in fully accessible spaces across the city. Through the Activate programme, young people are supported to overcome stigma, build social connections, and develop lifelong healthy habits.
We’re looking for a passionate and proactive Physical Activity Coordinator to lead the delivery of the Activate programme in Edinburgh. You'll engage young disabled people, co-design tailored activity plans, deliver inclusive physical sessions, and collaborate with partners to create a sustainable, supportive environment for active lifestyles.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Establish and launch Enable’s Activate programme in Edinburgh, building relationships with local stakeholders, marketing the programme, and developing networks to engage young disabled people in physical activity.
Engage children and young people aged 11-18 (up to 25 if care experienced) with a focus on those with learning, sensory, and physical disabilities who face significant barriers to participation and are at greater risk of social isolation and poorer health outcomes.
Deliver a varied, inclusive, and engaging curriculum that supports young people to overcome barriers to physical activity. Activities may include one-to-one coaching, walking & wheeling clubs, sensory-friendly sessions, active play, peer-led activities, and music & movement workshops.
Support young people with travel-based activities within their local communities, including confidence building in active travel to promote independence and long-term participation.
Develop partnerships with local organisations, schools, sports providers, and community groups to increase access to inclusive physical activity opportunities across Edinburgh.
Host volunteer-led events and engage families to promote healthier, more active lifestyles and inclusive community participation.
Track and report on participant progress, using Enable’s systems and tools to evidence outcomes and support evaluation.
Ensure all delivery complies with regulatory and quality standards, including health and safety, safeguarding, and child protection.
Carry out any other duties reasonably required to support the successful delivery of the Activate programme.
