Summary

Clinical Leadership and Accountability Lead the delivery of safe, effective, and high-quality patient care across the perioperative pathway. Act as the senior point of accountability for clinical services, ensuring all care aligns with organisational policies and national standards. Maintain robust systems to manage patient safety, including adherence to infection prevention protocols, surgical safety guidelines, and clinical risk management processes. Engage with patients and their families to address concerns proactively, ensuring a positive experience and a respectful approach to care. Operational Excellence Oversee daily theatre operations, ensuring efficient list management, resource allocation, and minimal delays or cancellations. Collaborate with surgeons and other stakeholders to ensure smooth workflows and the resolution of operational challenges. Maintain oversight of the sites risk register, ensuring risks are identified, escalated, and mitigated effectively. As well as ensuring your team are aware of these risks and any action being taken to address or mitigate them. Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for the site and lead actions to address variances in service delivery. Patient Safety and Quality Governance Promote patient safety through adherence to established safety protocols, ensuring consistent standards of care in line with PSIRF (Patient Safety Investigation Response Framework). Lead on incident reporting and patient safety incident investigations using SEIPS methodology (Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety), ensuring we understand the work as should be done to identify lessons learned to integrate into practice. Champion quality improvement initiatives, encouraging the team to identify opportunities for enhanced care delivery and service efficiency. Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control measures, participating in audits and leading actions to address gaps, meeting upload and submission deadlines. Team Development and Leadership Provide strong leadership to the clinical team, ensuring clear direction, effective communication, and a collaborative culture. Support the professional development of team members through mentorship, appraisals, completion of statutory mandatory training and access to broader training opportunities. Promote staff well-being and provide support during challenging situations, fostering a positive and inclusive working environment. Including signposting e.g. Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) and any necessary Occupational Health (OH) Referrals. Safe Staffing, Resource and Budget Management Address workforce planning needs, ensuring adequate staffing levels and skill mix to meet service demands. This includes 6 weeks in advance rostering compliance. Mitigate staffing issues, escalating to the Matron when feeling this needs support to do so. Manage resources effectively, including equipment, consumables, and staffing, to optimise clinical and operational efficiency. Monitor site budgets and work with finance teams to ensure financial performance aligns with organisational expectations and goals. Ensure all equipment is maintained and used safely, with systems in place for timely procurement and repair. This will involve working closely with the Supply Chain / Procurement teams. Empowering the Team Foster an environment where staff are empowered to contribute to decision-making, driving positive changes in practice and operations. Actively engage team members in policy development and service improvement initiatives, ensuring their voice is heard, acted upon and valued. Encourage staff to pursue professional development opportunities, certifications, and advanced education, providing support and recognition for their achievements. Continuous Quality Improvement (QI) and Innovation Use data and feedback from patient outcomes, audits, and incidents to drive improvements in care quality and operational efficiency. Encourage innovation in care delivery and operational processes, fostering a culture where staff feel safe to propose and test new ideas. Ensure attendance to meetings to ensure plans to align service and site-level improvements with organisational priorities and national healthcare standards. Patient and Family-Centred Care Champion patient and family-centred care principles by ensuring patients preferences, values, and cultural needs are respected and integrated into care delivery. Engage with patients and their families to solicit feedback, using insights to continuously improve the patient experience. Support and investigate where learning maybe required. This includes learning from the 4 Cs (Comments, Concerns, Complaints or Compliments) as well as Friends & Family Test (FFT) Feedback. Professional Practice Promote a professional practice model that supports autonomy, evidence-based practice, and interprofessional collaboration. Ensure the use of robust clinical guidelines and national best practice standards Including but not limited to: National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE), Royal Colleges & Get It Right First Time (GIRFT). As well as any other broader protocols, to ensure fostering an evidence-based decision-making approach within the team. Lead by example, demonstrating professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to excellence in every aspect of care delivery. Health & Safety, Business Continuity, and Emergency Preparedness Ensure compliance with Health & Safety regulations, including sharps management, fire safety, manual handling, lone working policies, and environmental risk assessments. Maintain business continuity by ensuring robust contingency measures for staffing, equipment failures, IT disruptions, and unforeseen operational challenges, enabling the site to continue delivering safe patient care with minimal disruption. Ensure all staff are trained in emergency response protocols, including fire evacuation, resuscitation, and major incident procedures, to enhance site resilience. Keep an up-to-date printed copy of the policy available at all sites for quick reference in the event of an emergency or system failure. Regularly review risk assessments and conduct safety audits, integrating lessons learned from incidents to continuously improve safety, resilience, and service continuity. Safeguarding Safeguarding Children Everyone working for IHG regardless of the work they do has a statutory duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of children. When children and/or their carers use our services, it is essential that all child protection concerns are both recognised and acted on appropriately. You have a responsibility to ensure you are familiar with and follow the child protection policies and procedures.
