Summary
To work autonomously as a sonographer undertaking a range of ultrasound examinations To independently produce timely high quality ultrasound reports often interpreting highly complex features To have specialist knowledge experience and skills in ultrasound at post graduate level To act as a role model providing support to qualified and unqualified staff To be involved in teaching of ultrasound to student sonographers midwives and registrars To ensure that patients are professionally cared for during the examination and their time in the department and when necessary break bad news in a sensitive and compassionate manner To supervise junior staff assistants and students. The post holder will be expected to be autonomous in and develop their clinical practice scanning and range of ultrasounds examinations and interpreting and reporting on the findings Clinical and Service Provision: To work as a sonographer undertaking a range of ultrasound examinations performing these to a high professional standard To provide specialist information by performing, interpreting and reporting examinations as per departmental protocols. Reports should be generated promptly on the Radiology Information System (CRIS) ensuring that any urgent findings are acted upon appropriately as per directorate standard operating procedure Ensure that appropriate follow up investigations are suggested discussing this with a radiologist when necessary To inform patients of their scan results when appropriate imparting bad news eg foetal death/abnormality in a sensitive and empathetic way and to provide help and support to colleagues with respect to this To assess the patients physical and psychological suitability for transvaginal ultrasound before deciding to proceed with the examination and obtaining consent for the procedure to be undertaken To be responsible for individual workflow ensuring that scans and reports are expedited in timely manner To advise on the booking of appointments examination preparation and liaise with staff regarding emergency referrals and queries Supervise junior staff assistants and students when required To ensure that patients are cared for in the department especially in their own area of work To communicate to patients and others any delays likely to affect them Checking patient details prior to examination and ensuring that details are correct (PAUSED and checked) and that the examination is justified Sonographers must use their professional judgement to reject inappropriate requests Ensuring that on completion of examination the patient is informed how they will get their results To be responsible for own workflow (including out of hours working and lone worker) within the designated area ensuring that clinical requests are acted upon as appropriately and plan and prioritise patients accordingly Have a flexible attitude towards the hours of work and participate in work and duties as required relevant to the directorate Potentially to participate in any out of hours rota already established or established in the future To maintain a safe clean and tidy environment and that adequate stock are available within the ultrasound rooms To participate in management of waiting list by vetting examination requests in a timely and effective manner To take appropriate action to ensure the safety of patients self and others reporting any accidents/incidents To liaise with the Lead Sonographer when appropriate Quality To participate in and promote quality assurance within the ultrasound department Professional Education and Training To work independently as a sonographer taking responsibility for images and reports produced To contribute to and participate in appraisal and work to achieve agreed set objectives To maintain a portfolio to show evidence of personal professional development To be responsible for own registration with the HCPC / RCT / RCM or other professional body To ensure all mandatory training is up to date To be responsible for maintaining competencies and completing necessary online training for maintaining accreditation To maintain a professional attitude at all times Statutory and Health and Safety To ensure that all Trust, Unit and Directorate policies relating to Health and Safety COSHH Security etc To attend compulsory training as instructed Ensure that all apparatus and equipment is working satisfactorily and safely and that faults are reported appropriately Any unreasonable delay in repair is brought to the attention of the lead sonographer Any fault occurring on equipment is entered into the relevant logbook Assist the lead sonographer in keeping appropriate documentation for equipment within the area
