The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) is part of the Department for Transport (DfT). Its purpose is to ‘Improve aviation safety by determining the causes of air accidents and serious incidents and making safety recommendations intended to prevent recurrence.’ The AAIB investigates accidents and serious incidents to civil aircraft in the UK and overseas where there is a UK interest.

The AAIB is also the UK Authority for the investigation of spaceflight accidents (SAIA), authorised to conduct safety investigations when there are space flights in or over the UK. For further information about our work please visit www.aaib.gov.uk

The Personal Assistant to the Chief Inspector of Air Accidents (PA CIAA) plays a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB). Reporting directly to the Chief Inspector, the post-holder will provide high-level executive support to the Chief Inspector, Deputy Chief Inspector, and the wider AAIB management team. This is a highly visible role with a strong external-facing element, involving regular interaction with senior stakeholders. The successful candidate will be entrusted with handling sensitive and confidential information, and must demonstrate sound judgement, discretion, and professionalism at all times.

Duties and Responsibilities

Key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Filtering and prioritising all incoming communications to the Chief Inspector (CIAA) and Deputy Chief Inspector of Air Accidents (DCIAA).
  • Using knowledge of working patterns and preferences to plan schedules and manage the diaries of the CIAA and DCIAA.
  • Preparing first drafts of emails and letters on behalf of the CIAA and DCIAA.
  • Organising and managing all processes associated with the various management meetings, including drafting agendas, compiling and circulating other necessary papers, producing note of actions and key decisions, and keeping action logs under review.
  • Decide, manage, and organise the AAIB visit and lecture schedule including communication with stakeholders that request visits.
  • Maintain a list of key senior personnel in the Department for Transport and other key stakeholder organisations, developing strong working relationships with them and their representatives.
  • Event planning - sourcing & booking venues and arranging speakers and catering where necessary.
  • Supporting Senior Management Team (SMT) vacancy holders - booking rooms, confirming panel members and catering requirements for inspector recruitment campaigns.
