Summary

A Vacancy at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH) is the largest children’s hospital in the United Kingdom and a University Teaching Hospital linked with University of Manchester Medical School. As one of the largest providers of healthcare graduates in the Northwest, Manchester Medical School plays a pivotal role in the training of doctors. Essential to this is the delivery of a world leading clinical curriculum. The Undergraduate Department at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust has a strong reputation for delivering high quality, enjoyable, innovative teaching utilising clinical skills tutors, lecturers, and doctors.

These 2 exciting Undergraduate Clinical Education Fellow posts will offer the postholders the opportunity to develop skills and experience in medical education whilst also gaining a broad clinical experience in the assessment and management of a wide variety of paediatric conditions including children with complex medical and surgical needs in a supportive, friendly, and highly renowned Children’s Hospital.

The post holders will contribute to a clinical paediatric post within General Paediatrics, including out-of-hours on-call Tier 2 cover of secondary and tertiary paediatric specialities, at 60% WTE. There is 24-hour onsite Tier 2 and 3 critical care support. The remaining 40% of their job plan is spent in undergraduate education activities within RMCH and the undergraduate department at MFT Manchester Royal Infirmary.

The postholders will contribute to a clinical paediatric post in General Paediatrics at RMCH ORC including out-of hours on-call middle-grade (Tier 2) duties as part of the Hospital 24 team at 60% WTE, working with a clinical paediatric team, caring for children with RMCH. They would be involved in the assessment, investigation and management of inpatients and outpatients at RMCH including assessment within the Paediatric Emergency Department where indicated. They will be responsible for immediate supervision of the junior tier doctors when on call or at the weekends. Daily ward rounds are led and supported by the hot week Consultant. All referrals regarding Child Protection are seen by middle grade doctors/Consultants.

The Undergraduate Clinical Education Fellows will support Manchester Medical School undergraduate students on clinical placements within RMCH through facilitation of ward-based and classroom-based (including virtual) teaching sessions, co-ordination of student learning activities, and simulated environments (skills lab, simulation suite) to supplement their educational experience in clinical areas. They will be encouraged to collaborate with other Education Fellows within the trust and to develop innovative ways to deliver medical education. Prior experience of teaching medical students would be an advantage.
