Summary
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES Clinical With support from the Registered Nurse, participate fully in the delivery of planned nursing care. Undertake general patient observations including; Oxygen saturation levels, general appearance, Blood pressures and Temperature check and report anything untoward to Registered Nursing Staff. Undertake venepuncture using aseptic technique and in keeping with Trust guidelines. At the direction of the Registered Nurse, undertake a range of clinical duties and skills eg, undertaking simple dry dressings using an aseptic technique, collection of patient specimens for laboratory testing and ordering diagnostic tests. Under the direction of the Registered Nurse Involve patients and carers/relatives in the delivery of care. Assist with the needs of patients/ visitors, particularly those who may be distressed or require assistance and communicate in a manner that is appropriate to them and the situation. Work collaboratively with others in the department to ensure that patients needs are met. Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations. Assist with the transfer of patients with minor dependency, as directed to other Clinical Departments for investigations or treatment ensuring appropriate equipment is available prior to transfer. Undertake safe disposal of waste and sharps as per Trust policy Care of patients property and valuables in accordance with Trust policy. Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment, including clearing and cleaning all clinics, treatment, clean utility, blood rooms and sluice rooms in preparation for re-use, secure and handle clinical waste and used linen for safe collection and/or disposal. Participate in daily and weekly cleaning schedules and inform the Team Leader if unable to complete cleaning shift. Carry out the following tasks under the specific direction of the Registered Nurse responsible for the patient at the time e.g process blood samples through using the nursing staff or the trust porters or using the Pod system. Preparation of trolley for aseptic technique to assist the RGN / Doctor in obtaining Blood Cultures or Suture removal/ Dressing of Post-operative wounds. LEADERSHIP Make suggestions about the effectiveness of the role in order to assist with the development of services. Ensure the effective and efficient use of resources. Maintain health, safety and security of patients and staff and report any concern. Undertake a range of clerical duties in the absence of the RGN / Team Leader to ensure a smooth running of service inc; reception and telephone duties, basic computer skills, locating and obtaining case notes are safely secured and send away for scanning to the admin staff. Maintain a clean and safe environment for patients and staff and report any concern. Monitor and maintain adequate ward stock levels of stationary, ward provisions, clean linen etc. Provide support and assistance to newly qualified staff to understand the role of the Health Care Assistant and how to dispose of equipment. Provide mentorship and support for new band 2/ 3 staff ensuring competency booklet is completed. EDUCATION AND TRAINING Attend induction course and complete orientation programme in order to achieve core competencies. Participate in Training and Development as identified in Personal Development Review (PDR). Attend mandatory in-service training sessions as per Trust policy. PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES Comply with all Trust and Unit policies in relation to all aspects of practice. Act in ways that support peoples equality, diversity and rights HEALTH AND SAFETY Have responsibility for the safe management of the department and ensure the safety of others affected by the departments activities. Liaise with the Trust adviser and ensure that any advice is implemented. Ensure the Trust and departmental safety policies, arrangements, assessments etc are maintained and made available for staff and that they are adhered to. Identify and assess risks to themselves and others. Carry out safety inspections and ensure remedial actions are taken. Ensure accidents are reported and recorded. Report to their line managers any identified actions to ensure Health and Safety that cannot be affected within their resources.
