About the job
This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic, organised and effective individual to join Newcastle Borough Councils Arboriculture team in an exciting professional development role.

The Arboriculture team provides essential management and operational services in relation to the councils tree stock across its wide land ownership, dealing with tree issues through responsive and planned processes to ensure the excellent health management of trees and to reduce risk associated with our maturing tree stock.

Newcastle Borough Council is committed to providing high quality services to its residents and communities and is a place where we strive to meet the needs of our communities by empowering and enabling our people to deliver on shared goals. The vacancy is for an Apprentice Arboriculture (Tree) Surveyor.

The role will add technical capacity to our Arboriculture team in the management of our tree stock of over 115,000.

The successful candidate will undertake training and support via office working, on site surveying and through on line learning to develop the skills we require to become an Arboriculture (Tree) Surveyor.

You will develop skills in using software-based management systems including handheld remote working equipment, assess tree risk to inform decision making, produce plans using digital mapping software, manage projects, issue instructions to contractors and develop excellent tree species identification and their characteristics.

You will have a passion for tree management and an understanding of the importance of trees to our environment and the wider benefits and risk associated with trees and have the confidence to engage with residents, colleagues and contractors.

A crucial aspect of the role will be to develop the required skills to undertake independent tree surveys to all land types including parks, open spaces, dense woodlands and remote locations necessitating the need to drive and be physically fit to access locations effectively.

Requirements
You will be required to have the necessary academic qualifications to access a Level 4 Arboriculturist Apprenticeship standard with Myerscough College, or other suitable provider, for your online learning via lectures and tutorial support, which will be supported and underpinned during your working experience with us, working directly to the Arboriculture Manager.

You must have a positive ‘can do’ attitude with a proactive solution-based approach for this varied role for where there is only room for team players. An ability to communicate clearly and accurately with operational colleagues, managers, customers is essential.

We expect good teamwork, and focus on being accountable, respectful of everybody and achieving our goals.

Why work for us?
Newcastle-under-Lyme is a borough with big ambitions. We’ve already started our transformation, however, we still need to find better ways of doing things because we are determined to do the very best we can for our communities.

If our vision is to be the best, then we need the best people working for us. Our people are at the heart of what we do and have the freedom to innovate, grow and develop. We recruit people who share our vision and values; people who have the drive to deliver our ambitious Council plan.

Our historic Borough is a place of marked contrasts. We are the home of a world class University at Keele, a leading light known internationally for its research and sustainability record, which stands side by side with former mining communities including some which register amongst the most deprived areas in the country. Our Borough is also a mixture of urban centres, affected by some of the same social issues facing our neighbouring city, Stoke-on-Trent, but also outstanding rural landscapes in our less populated villages. Our plans and priorities aim to address the needs of all our communities.

Our People Offer
We reward our people with a competitive range of benefits including; access to the local government pension scheme, minimum 24 days annual leave plus 5 extra days after 5 years' service, flexible working options and family friendly policies, local and national high street discounts, free car parking, green travel scheme including cycle to work and electric car salary sacrifice, free employee 24 hour employee assistance and counselling services, flu vaccination service and health checks plus development and training opportunities.
