Summary

JOB SUMMARY To provide a high quality, developing and flexible portering, mail and maintenance service within a South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust or for other organisations as directed. Progressive training and experience in elements of the facilities technical support workers duties will help the post holder to reach levels of flexibility and competence over a wide range of traditional building and engineering semi skilled work. KEY RESULT AREAS: 1. Portering General Duties To ensure that the daily collection and delivery of mail is carried out as scheduled. To sort mail and ensure mail is transported to its destination in the shortest possible time. To collect items from Pharmacy and deliver to Trust premises as required. To collect and deliver specimens to and from Trust premises and Pathology as required. To obtain proof of receipt when required from service users following delivery. To deliver, remove or transfer equipment from/to/between Trust premises. To deliver stores to all villas and ward areas. To deliver food to villas and ward areas. 2. Security Duties To secure buildings and property as required. Ensure security of keys is maintained in the porters lodge. Undertake regular security checks of premises during silent hours. Reset burglar alarms and advise the Portering / Transport Manager. To liaise with the security department as and when required. To monitor CCTV equipment and act appropriately when required. 3. Linen / Refuse Collections and Deliveries To collect dirty linen / rubbish from wards, departments and community premises. Dispose of cytotoxic waste adhering to DoE guidelines ensuring collection. 4. Maintenance To assist in the maintenance of Trust properties and services. To carry out planned maintenance work: o Fire alarm panels monitor and reset o Temperature checks legionella o Door closers o Maintenance checks of Trust vehicles and completion of paperwork (oil, water, tyres, lights etc). o Washing of Trust vehicles. o Clearing of road gullies and gutters. o Cleanliness of Trust grounds, removal of rubbish, sweeping etc. o Monitor and record fridge / freezer temperatures. To carry out repairs / new work as the job indicates: o Install notice boards, shelving, pictures, paper towel dispensers, soap dispensers etc. o Board up windows. o Basic plumbing tasks replace kip wastes, ball valves, plug tops. o Unblock sinks, toilets, showers etc/ o Clean light fittings and re-lamp. o Check external lighting and replace where necessary. o To reset the gas boiler when required. To ensure all pavements, roads and patient areas are safe as reasonably practicable during inclement weather i.e. gritting. To advise the Portering / Transport Manager of any defects so that repairs can be carried out by following the correct procedures. To assist in general gardening duties are required. Carry out any other reasonable tasks as instructed by the Portering / Transport Manager. 5. Miscellaneous To report accidents / incidents immediately and in accordance with Trust policy. To be courteous and polite at all times to service users and provide a friendly efficient service. To work closely with Ward Managers and work alongside patients and have an understanding of their needs whilst carryout out their duties. Establish good working relationships with all points of contact with facilities users, ensuring they are kept informed about the progress of work as required. Driving hospital vehicles and plant vehicles as required not HGV. To operate such vehicles in a reasonable manner, complying with all current road traffic regulations. To take reasonable precautions when handling Trust property. The post holder may be required to carry out duties which are of lesser still nature than the post for which he / she is employed. The post holder will be expected to work at any properties throughout the Trust as instructed by the Portering / Transport Manager. The post holder will on occasions be required to work overtime / change working hours if the need of service dictates. All Trust employees are expected to maintain existing skills and develop / receive training in new skills as required to carry out work at the Trust. To ensure the appropriate use of safety and protective clothing and equipment, as required by good working practice and the Health and Safety at Work Act. To read, understand and apply safety guidance notes, hazard letters, fire instructions and other such documents as issued to the post holder by the Portering / Transport Manager. It is the responsibility of all Trust employees to ensure that all duties are carried out in accordance with best practice risk management.
