Summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated clinician with an interest in academic urology to join the world-leading urological oncology team at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. The post offers hands-on clinical experience across a range of tertiary-level surgical oncology services, as well as a dedicated research focus—particularly in advanced prostate cancer. It is ideally suited for candidates looking to further develop their academic portfolio in a high-impact environment or to potentially pursue a higher research degree (MD/PhD). The successful applicant will work closely with consultant colleagues in urology and collaborators across the University of Manchester and Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute on clinical/translational research projects

The post-holder will provide clinical and research support to the surgical urological oncology service at The Christie. Clinical duties include working in outpatient clinics, theatre, diagnostics, and multidisciplinary team (MDT) settings. The Fellow will also undertake a lead research project and contribute to departmental research studies, which may include the STAMPEDE trial, the National Prostate Cancer Audit, or associated translational studies. For the right candidate, opportunities exist to align research with a higher degree. There is no mandatory on-call commitment, although participation in a surgical oncology on-call rota may be possible.

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.

We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years.

We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The appointee will be based at The Christie Hospital and will provide supported work in both ward and outpatient settings, oncological and andrological procedures in theatre, and research.

The post holder will support the Consultant Urological Surgeons, work alongside resident doctors and liaise closely with senior medical colleagues. The appointee’s professional time will be deployed flexibly in appropriate areas: clinical duties, administration, teaching, research, clinical audit etc. Detailed elements of the job plan arrangements are to be agreed with the successful applicant when in post.

Continuing Professional Development

The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and surgical colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.

Role Planning

The job plan outlines the requirements of the post and may be altered by joint agreement with the Divisional Clinical Director and Service Manager and in response to service needs. Job plans are also subject to an annual review as detailed in the Trust’s Job Planning Policy. It is expected that the initial job plan discussion will take place within the first six months of employment at the Trust.

The annual review will examine all aspects of the job plan (including any Educational components) and will also include an assessment of professional development with defined goals for the future.
