Summary
Here at Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust, we are excitedly looking for our next sub-specialty trainee in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (at Emergency Medicine ST4-6 level) to be based in our busy Emergency Department at the QMC campus. The post is due to commence August 2025 for a 12 month period.
You will be expected to rotate between Paediatric Emergency Medicine (6 months), PICU (3 months) and General Paediatrics (3 months) and we can confirm that this post is approved for sub-specialty training in paediatric emergency medicine.
We understand that approval for sub-specialty training in paediatric emergency medicine may be granted post CCT and therefore we will welcome applications from candidates who already hold a CCT in emergency medicine.
This post is designed to provide a comprehensive training in paediatric emergency medicine and to enable you to become a confident and effective Emergency Department Consultant.
You will be expect to take senior clinical role within CYPED, seeing and reviewing CYP with serious illness and injury, including leading trauma teams.
You'll be expected to keep up to date with current knowledge and practice, to attend clinical meetings within the department and to participate in audit and in service training of other professionals.
Located in one of the friendliest and greenest cities in the UK, Nottingham University Hospitals Trust (NUH) is a Major Trauma Centre and our ED is one of the busiest in Europe, seeing 179,940 new patients a year across co-located adult and Childrens and Young People's departments.
NUH consists of the Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) and the Nottingham City Hospital Campuses. QMC houses our Emergency Department which has co-located adult and children’s units. NUH is the Major Trauma Centre for the East Midlands region.
Our forward thinking, research active Emergency Department is one of the busiest in Europe with 195,000 new attendances annually. The Children’s ED sees 44,000 children and young people and has expanded its resuscitation capability with a major capital investment.
Nottingham is a haven for sports lovers and nature lovers. It is home to two famous football teams, an ice hockey team, an annual tennis open and boasts a test cricket ground and the National Ice and Water Sports Centres. Known for its high quality schools, the city has excellent rail and road links and an ultra-modern bus and tram service. A vibrant university city, the centre has an array of shops, restaurants, clubs and attractions to suit all ages and tastes.

Clinical audit is an important part of the department’s governance procedures. You will be expected to undertake (under the supervision of a Consultant) a clinically relevant audit project and present it at one of the department’s monthly audit meetings.
Education and research are actively encouraged within the department. You will be expected to deliver formal and informal training within the department to members of the multi-disciplinary team.
NUH is a leader in the field of using new data sets to improve doctor experience/training, and has forged strong research links with the University of Nottingham. There will be opportunities to be involved in exciting and innovative projects around the use of novel IT solutions and app development.
Please note that in order to be eligible for sub-specialty recognition, you must fulfil the essential criteria set out by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine. We’d advise that you consult the person specification set out by the college for full details:
• Eligible for full registration with the GMC at the time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice
• Evidence of achievement of Foundation Programme competencies from a UKFPO affiliated Foundation Programme or equivalent
• Evidence of achievement of CT1, CT2 & CT3 ACCS EM competencies at Core Trainee level supported by evidence from workplace–based assessment of clinical performance (DOPS, Mini-CEX, CbD, ACAT) and multisource feedback (MSF) or equivalent, ARCP or equivalent
You will be allocated a PEM Consultant who will be your supervisor throughout your one year post and will support you to achieve the paediatric ED competencies as set out jointly by RCEM and RCPCH.
You will be supported to attend one full day per month of local teaching. The ED teaching programme is regional and attended by middle grade trainees from both East Midlands North and South.
The Deanery is committed to developing postgraduate training programmes as laid down by PMETB, Colleges and Faculties and by the Postgraduate Dean’s Network. At local level, college/specialty tutors work with Unit Director or Postgraduate Education in supervising these programmes. You will be expected to take part in these programmes (including audit) and to attend counselling sessions/professional review. Study leave will form part of these education programmes and will be arranged in conjunction with the appropriate tutor.

The documentary series marked its 10th year by relocating outside of London for the first time to the Queen’s Medical Centre. ‘24 Hours in A&E’ offers viewer’s a look inside the country’s busiest Emergency Departments. The show offers viewers a look inside one of the country’s busiest Emergency Departments. It gives our staff a great opportunity to show their friendliness, passion and skill and the care and kindness provided every day to patients and relatives.
