A bit about me:
We are proud parent/carers for our 19-year-old son, who has Asperger’s, OCD and Catatonia (severe anxiety that impacts his daily functioning.) He is exceedingly polite and resilient. Our son absolutely loves familiarity but can enjoy stepping out of his comfort zone with prior knowledge and preparation. He has a whole host of interests from drawing, basic baking, construction (Lego for one,) culture and arts, as well as Sci-Fi (Dr Who, Star Wars...) He enjoys socialising and meeting other people in a calm, low volume and uncrowded space. Our son enjoys Keep Fit club and would be keen to attend similar sessions or perhaps attend a youth club with similar minded peers.
About the role:
Several aspects to the role – hence why this may be ideal for a job share post, pending the duties you could potentially be taking on.
1. Our son will require assistance in mornings Monday to Friday term-time, to pace him first thing – getting up, encouraged to spend less time upstairs building up those daily worries, and ensuring a high calorie breakfast is provided and medication taken. We have all the relevant resources for this. No actual personal hygiene will need to be implemented, unless our son would like support with washing his hair.
2. Our son will require support accessing his online learning (Functional Skills and Bronze Art Award.)
3. To support our son access something in the community; be this Spire Club, Boccia at 5 Rivers, or engage in an activity together; gardening, playing a game, going to a museum or visit an outdoor site; our son has National Trust membership with Free companion card.
The kind of person I am looking for:
Due to the nature of our Son, this post would be ideal for someone who has a basic understanding of a similar role to a Teaching Assistant and a low-level understanding of ICT, to support his learning. However, this it is not essential to be a Teaching Assistant, but more to assist our son when he may require additional support. When this is not required, you may have the time to make a light lunch for once he has completed his learning.
It is a necessary requirement to have patience in allowing the time for our son to process and respond to communication(s).
To be flexible and sensitive to needs, being able to use one’s initiative.
Being aware of safeguarding especially when using public facilities.
Having knowledge of strategies and knowing when to implement them; from sensory support, to movement breaks and engaging with our son as to what may be relevant and appropriate at the time.
Prerequisites in basic Maths, English and ICT, with a similar interests/hobbies, to enhance our son’s confidence and co-independence.
