Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen in Clinical Biochemistry department within the NHS East and Southeast London Pathology Partnership’s (ESEL). We are a new organisation, jointly owned by Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. Set up as an arms-length organisation, hosted by Barts Health NHS Trust, we have our own board and governance framework, with each of the three trusts having an equal voice and vote in the running of the Pathology Partnership. One of the largest pathology providers in the NHS, the Pathology Partnership brings together the strengths of teams from each of the three trusts into a single organisation, dedicated to the provision of high quality and cost-effective pathology services.
Clinical Biochemistry spans an integrated network of 7 hospital laboratories, centred atThe Royal London Hospital (RLH); a busy major trauma centre which hosts the London Air Ambulance, and connected to essential service laboratories which support local clinical specialities at our partnered hospital sites.Including St. Bartholomew Hospital, Whipps Cross Hospital, Newham Hospital, Homerton Hospital, Lewisham Hospital and Queens Elizabeth Hospital.
We are seeking a strong team player with a positive attitude to working in a flexible manner, committed to supporting the clinical services and meeting the needs of our patients by participating in the extended day, weekend, bank holiday rosters
This is arotational postwhere employees operate in different work areas and across the different ESEL laboratories. A policy applied pragmatically, whereby the successful candidate will be placed at a ‘base’ laboratory and work at partnered laboratories to a lesser extent. The ‘base’ laboratory is subject to change. Currently there are opportunities at the Newham Hospital laboratory
The successful Band 6 candidateMUSTbe registered with the HCPC as a Biomedical ScientistANDhold the following
• CPSM Log book (Clinical Biochemistry) if qualified before 2003.OR
• Registration portfolio IBMS (Clinical Biochemistry2003 to 2004)andDiploma in Biomedical Science IBMS (Blood Sciences 2005).OR
• Specialist Diploma IBMS (Clinical Biochemistry2005 onwards)

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.
The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.
Pathology is made up of the following services - Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry; Infectious Diseases including Microbiology and Virology; Cellular Pathology including Histopathology, non-gynae Cytology and mortuary services; Immunology; Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology; Immunophenotyping; Clinical Transplantation and Retinoblastoma.[AK1]
The 2020/21 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £126m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 822 WTE. Candidates must hold HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist and have completed an IBMS Specialist Diploma (or CPSM log book) in Clinical Biochemistry.
Candidates should be in possession of strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills and have a minimum 2 year’s post registration experience in Clinical Biochemistry, (2 years in acute hospital setting) with evidence of CPD.
Candidates who do not hold the completed IBMS Specialist Diploma may be considered but will be taken on under an Annex 21 contract where a percentage of Specialist Band 6 BMS salary will apply as per terms outlined in the NHS Terms and Conditions of Service Handbook.
Candidates taken on under Annex 21 contracts will be expected to complete the IBMS Specialist Diploma within 2 years of commencement of the role
Training support will be provided for completion of the IBMS Specialist Diploma.
