Mott MacDonald’s support services are the driving force behind our organisation enabling us to run efficiently and effectively. The team works collaboratively to offer specialist advice, best practice and technology to all areas of our business specifically designed for our global reach.
We are seeking a senior archivist to lead establishing the professional curation of our heritage, bringing processes to maturity and then operating and developing the heritage function as an integral component of the business. We have been professionally informed that our heritage material is world class.
Our portfolio includes some of the most important social and engineering achievements, for example much of the London Underground, Egypt’s Aswan Dam, the electrification of much of Asia and the Arabian Gulf, the Channel Tunnel, Hong Kong Airport, Wembley Stadium and the Boston Central Artery. Within the last few years we have completed major roles on the Elizabeth Line, the Sydney Metro and programmes that have transformed girls’ education in Uganda and antimicrobial resistance across a dozen countries in Africa and Asia. Every day we are creating tomorrow’s heritage in around 140 countries around the world.
We would like to be better able to use our heritage to:
- Provide immutable evidence of our experience delivering truly world-class assets and projects with our clients.
- Support the codification of our culture as a collection of engineering and technical professionals that deliver amazing results.
- Present our heritage to we can use it during onboarding of new staff to help develop an emotional connection between themselves and who we are and what we represent.
- Showcase our heritage amongst a broader base of stakeholders
- with pride and authenticity. Embedding mindsets that Mott MacDonald is a vanguard of engineering excellence and a place people come to for brilliant technical opportunities.
Having treated heritage materials informally until recently we have now taken the first steps towards professional development and curation of our extensive heritage collection, and are committed to its use to inspire our clients, colleagues and the wider industry, and to discover the stories within it. Examples of our recent work in this area are a podcast exploring the Dinorwig pumped storage scheme in Wales (Europe’s largest construction project of its time) Designing Dinorwig: Inside Electric Mountain
- Engineering Matters, and another featuring our pioneering work bringing electricity to Sydney, and its parallels to today’s energy transition Electrifying Sydney: Transformational Energy Systems
- Engineering Matters.
We have the support of our Executive Chair, James Harris, as senior sponsor for this key part of what makes us who we are, and have committed to build a heritage capability within our Excellence function, with the role reporting to our Chief Technical Officer, with close collaboration with our Group Head of Strategy. The role will be linked closely with our marketing and internal engagement capabilities, as well as supporting the operational business as it looks to heritage to inform and inspire current work.
This role is an opportunity to shape the safeguarding, curation and exploitation of the firm’s heritage assets, including paper, digital and other materials relating to projects, physical artefacts, corporate documents, and the opportunity to gain oral heritage from current and retired employees. All against a backdrop of the long-lived physical realities of our built projects and their impacts on economies and on peoples’ lives. As a firm at the cutting edge of engineering we work digitally day to day, and part of the role will involve setting a path for digital heritage, and the heritage we have yet to create.
To some degree the responsibilities and duties of the senior heritage archivist will evolve as the role develops, but are expected to include:
- Owning and being accountable for the Group’s heritage assets, worldwide but with an initial focus on records held in the UK.
- Promote the value of our heritage to internal stakeholders, and coordinate any necessary rescue efforts · Lead the development and execution of a plan for the exploitation of our heritage.
- Facilitate and to an extent undertake research and interpretation.
- Work with teams in marketing, internal engagement and excellence to bring heritage to life, for business benefit. Build partnerships with other archives, including clients and peer organisations.
- Bring the current draft heritage policy to a state of completion, agreement and active use.
- Build over time a mature heritage curation capability for both physical and digital heritage.
- Work with the Group Head of Knowledge and our AI teams to create processes to capture future heritage as it is being created, and to mine existing digital assets for heritage content.
- Promote best practice in the curation and exploitation of our heritage
We would expect you to be a professional archivist, with appropriate professional qualifications. Ideally you will have worked already in the field of corporate heritage, and be experienced and comfortable with both physical and digital material.
You will need the confidence to take responsibility for our heritage, and to work alongside professionals from outside the heritage field, in a live and dynamic business environment. Whilst we will support you, you need to be a self-starter who will both develop plans and take them forward. You will need to be comfortable building support and consensus amongst stakeholders, including senior people, and presenting to a range of audiences.
The role will be based in a Mott MacDonald office in the UK and will require UK and some international travel.
