Summary

To work as a member of the Hospice multi-disciplinary team to provide a high standard of skilled, compassionate nursing care and symptom management to patients. To provide support to patients, families and carers. Main duties and responsibilities To maintain a multi-disciplinary team approach to the individualised care of the patient and maintain high standards of nursing care. To assess the needs of the patient and his/ her family taking into account his/ her physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs. To be responsible for planning, delivering and evaluating the effectiveness of care given to patients. To maintain accurate written records of care, communicating all necessary information to other team members. To participate fully in the setting, implementation and monitoring of formal standards of practice and to be involved, when required, in clinical governance and audit. To comply with the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council with regard to Professional Registration and to Post-Registration professional education and revalidation. Communicate appropriately with all patients, visitors and staff, liaise with other departments and agencies and attend departmental meetings as required. Maintain safe custody of the patients property/ valuables according to the Hospice policy. To participate in research projects as required. To participate in full rotation across all shifts including nights. Managerial To maintain a caring and mutually supportive working environment for all members of staff and volunteers, being sensitive to the emotional needs of colleagues and giving appropriate support to them. To maintain accurate records with regard to the administration and custody of drugs on the unit. To implement all statutory and unit policies relating to drugs. To maintain high standards of safety within the unit, reporting any hazardous occurrences or equipment. To report all accidents, incidents, complaints and untoward occurrences, keeping statutory and unit records as required. To take charge of the in-patient unit with support from senior colleagues following an appropriate period of assimilation. To observe fire precautions and procedures as outlined in the Hospice policy. To welcome both professional and other visitors to the unit. To observe unit policies on holidays. Sickness and absence. To exercise care and economy in the use of property and equipment. Education To assist in the teaching of new staff and volunteers so that they are able to function fully within the team. To attend relevant courses or study days when required. To participate in the teaching and guidance of visiting professionals eg Student Nurses, Social Workers and Post Graduate Students. To communicate skills learnt on secondment or study leave to other members of staff. To access and positively engage in role-related e-learning as directed by your line manager and Lead Nurse for Education.
