Summary

This is a time of increased investment in the paediatric allergy team and the successful applicants will have the opportunity to join a dynamic team actively redeveloping services to better support both primary care, secondary and tertiary paediatric services in Newcastle and its surrounds. To support our expanding role, we are looking for energetic enthusiastic General Practitioners with an Extended Role in Paediatric Allergy to join our allergy team of 2 WTE paediatric allergy consultants. You will have a role in supporting the department meet the increasing service demands along with assisting the development of services to further support our primary care colleagues in the community. We are looking for adaptable and skilled individuals comfortable in delivering in person or virtual care in a busy primary, secondary or tertiary outpatient setting. Additional special interests that complement those that already exist in the allergy department will be of benefit.

These substantive posts have been developed as part of the trusts vision to meet the increasing demands on the outpatient service in the paediatric allergy department along with continuing to deliver high quality inpatient and outpatient services for patients with multi-system allergic disease. This is a very interesting time to join the department as we actively extend our model of seamless allergy care which the successful candidates will have the opportunity to contribute to and will provide ample opportunities for service development and quality improvement work. As part of this work, we are further developing our outpatient services and having a specialist interest in a paediatric allergy subspeciality that complements the allergy department would be beneficial.

Clinical:
• To provide expert opinions on patients with a wide range of acute and longstanding paediatric allergy problems, taking independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to them.
• Work closely with nursing, and other staff to create or further develop systems of care dedicated to the management of children with specific allergic co-morbid disorders, in keeping with the general philosophy of the department.
• Support national initiative in Transitional Care in Allergic Disease
• Provide dedicated NHS and Private sessions within the paediatric allergy department in a flexible manner to ensure prospective cover at times of colleague absence.
• Undergo Continued Medical Education (CME) in accordance with guidelines stipulated by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH).
• Undergo Continued Medical Education (CME) in accordance with guidelines stipulated by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCPGP) with Extended Role (GpwER), as aligned within the Curriculum for Paediatric Allergy.
• Undertake an annual appraisal and job plan review. It is expected that objectives within job plan reviews will be based on Trust objectives such as fulfilment of fixed contractual commitments on the basis of a 43 week working year with due allowance for statutory holidays.

Administrative:
• Undertake administrative duties in relation to the care of his/her patients and in relation to the running of the Children’s Services Directorate in co-operation with the Heads of Department, Directorate Manager and Clinical Director. The appointee is entitled to become a member of the Medical Staff Committee of the hospital.
• To undertake general administrative duties within a context of compliance with Directorate and Trust aims and objectives.
• Become involved with the financial management of the paediatric allergy departmental budget - at all times looking to ensure the delivery of high quality care to agreed standards, but at the same time reviewing working practices to provide the most efficient use of resources.

Research:
• The Trust welcomes and encourages research as a high profile activity that compliments the service provided. The emphasis being on studies and clinical trials that fall within the National Institute of Health Research Portfolio

Teaching:
• Participate in the teaching of undergraduate medical students from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in all parts of the course but specifically aligned to the Paediatric Allergy Teaching (PAT Course 1,2,3)of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. Application will be made for the appointee to be granted the title of Honorary Clinical Lecturer in the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
• Active involvement in the clinical supervision of all postgraduate trainees in the allergy department with specific responsibility support a small number of individuals to complete their clinic portfolios to discuss with their named clinical and educational supervisor under the direction of the college tutor.
• The incumbent will be expected to contribute to the teaching of all levels of paediatric postgraduate trainees.
• Participate in the teaching and training of any other health care professionals within the Directorate – an ongoing and active contribution to the education of nurse practitioners on the admissions wards is an essential component of this job.
