Vacancy: General Maintenance & Groundworks Operative, Scarborough

Location: Scarborough area and in towns and villages across North Yorkshire and East Yorkshire - with occasional visits to other areas in the North of England.

Job summary: We are seeking a versatile and hardworking General Maintenance & Groundworks Operative to join our growing team. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in the outdoor construction and maintenance of our fibre telecommunications and wireless network.
This hands-on role involves a variety of duties, including groundworks, site maintenance, and providing essential support to our network installation teams. A full clean UK driving licence is essential for this position.

Key responsibilities:
General Maintenance: Carry out general maintenance tasks on company property and infrastructure as required.

Site Clearance & Maintenance: Undertake vegetation clearance, including the removal of overgrown trees, shrubs, and other foliage from radio tower sites, cabinet locations and along cable routes to ensure safe access and operational integrity.

Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine checks, basic maintenance, and ensure the cleanliness and safe operation of company equipment, including a cherry picker (MEWP - Mobile Elevated Work Platform). Ensure all equipment is fit for purpose and report any defects.

Driving & Logistics: Safely drive company vehicles, including vans and potentially vehicles with trailers (subject to licence categories) to transport tools, materials and installation colleagues to various work sites across our network footprint.

Assisting Network Engineers: Provide practical support to network engineers during the installation of fibre optic cabinets, pulling and jointing of fibre optic cables, and other related infrastructure tasks. This may include setting up work areas, handling materials and ensuring adherence to safety protocols.

Duct Installation: Assist with the excavation, laying and reinstatement of telecommunications ducts and chambers in residential streets, business parks and other designated areas. This will involve both manual digging and the use of small plant machinery where qualified.

Health & Safety: Adhere strictly to all UK health and safety regulations, company policies and site-specific requirements. Promote a safe working environment for yourself and your colleagues.

Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of work undertaken, materials used, and vehicle/equipment checks as required.

Required skills, experience and qualifications:
1. A full, clean UK driving licence is essential.
2. Proven experience in general maintenance or similar groundworks and construction roles.
3. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
4. Physically fit and able to undertake manual labour.
5. Some experience in civils work, particularly excavation and reinstatement, is highly desirable but not essential.
6. NRSWA (New Roads and Street Works Act) accreditation (e.g., Unit 2 Signing, Lighting, and Guarding) would be a significant advantage to job applicants.
7. Experience with operating small plant machinery (e.g., mini-digger, dumper) is desirable, and relevant certifications (e.g., CPCS, NPORS) would be beneficial.
8. Manual Handling certification is desirable.
9. First Aid at Work certification is desirable.
10. IPAF or a similar MEWP operator licence for cherry picker operation would be a distinct advantage, or a willingness to undertake training.
11. Strong work ethic, reliable, and punctual.
12. Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently when required.
13. Good communication skills.
14. A proactive approach to problem-solving.
15. Willingness to learn new skills and undertake further training.

Desirable Attributes:
Previous experience working within the telecommunications industry would be beneficial but is not essential, particularly on fibre optic networks.
Familiarity with reading and interpreting utility plans and/or construction drawings.

Working pattern and contracted hours: Monday to Friday plus one Saturday every 4 weeks – working hours are between 9am to 5.30pm with 1 hour for lunch. Total hours per week: 37.5 hours per week, plus overtime. Part-time applicants also considered.

Wage: Variable - see below. Note: These are standard minimum pay rates for this role (hourly rate is negotiable - subject to each applicant’s skills and experience).
• Ages 21 and over - £12.21 per hour
• Ages up to 20 - £10.00 per hour
