Economic Shocks Department

The DBT economic shocks team provide support to sector teams and collaborate across Whitehall to assess, prepare for and respond to economic shocks resulting from companies in distress. This includes:

  • Horizon scanning – identifying business and sector vulnerabilities that can lead to shocks; analysing future scenarios and quality assuring contingency plans.
  • Capability – providing expert guidance and tailored upskilling offer to teams in DBT.
  • Response – overseeing DBT response to companies in distress in line with the HM Treasury Business Engagement Process (BEP); ensuring it is proportionate, coherent and coordinated.
  • Lessons learned – managing, initiating and recording key takeaways from recent special situations and/or shocks.
  • XWH engagement – maintaining a network of Government department (OGD) colleagues working on shocks/special sits, assist and collaborate as required.

You will be responsible for:

  • Contributing to economic shocks response, supporting sector teams during critical periods and guiding them through best practice;
  • Assisting the management of a horizon scanning function, including working closely with a G7 analyst on the new approach to monitoring and reporting economic shocks risks;
  • Ensure that sector teams, the Permanent Secretary and Ministers have oversight of emerging risks and opportunities at company and sector level;
  • Developing approaches to and delivering scenario planning exercises for sector teams;
  • Supporting management of strategic join up across DBT and across Whitehall, focusing on intelligence related to potential economic shocks;
  • Effectively managing team’s briefing commissions, including on inquiries and Parliamentary committees;
  • Raising awareness of the team’s function, products and offer across DBT and with seniors;
  • Refreshing the suite of products available to sector teams to help them prepare for and respond to a shock;
  • Line managing and supporting an HEO;
  • Working across government with multiple departments to support wider objective's.
