Job Title: Mobility Trainer - Visually Impaired
Location: Near Major Universities (UK-wide, self-employed candidates)
Job Summary:
We are seeking qualified and experienced Mobility Trainers to join our network of self-employed professionals supporting students at universities across the UK. This is a potential future opportunity, and we are proactively building a pool of qualified candidates whom we can contact as needs arise at various campuses.
The role involves providing professional assessment of university environments and delivering time-limited, individualised orientation and mobility training programmes. This primarily supports blind or visually impaired students, enabling them to learn safe and efficient routes around campus based on their specific needs. By exception, support may also be extended to students with other disabilities significantly impacting their orientation (e.g., acquired brain injury). The focus is on skill development and fostering independence, distinct from providing ongoing sighted guide support.
Rate: £30 per hour (self-employed basis)
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct thorough assessments of university campus environments, identifying potential hazards and key landmarks relevant to student navigation.
Develop bespoke, time-limited orientation and mobility training plans tailored to individual student needs.
Deliver one-to-one training sessions focusing on safe travel techniques, route learning, spatial awareness, and orientation skills.
Teach students specific, safe routes between key campus locations (e.g., accommodation, lecture halls, library).
Collaborate with university Disability Advisory/Student Support teams to understand student requirements.
Maintain accurate records of assessments, training plans, and student progress.
Provide feedback on campus accessibility issues identified during training.
Empower students to navigate independently and confidently.
