Summary

Are you passionate about protecting and understanding aquatic ecosystems? The Thames Area Analysis and Reporting Team is on the lookout for dedicated Freshwater Ecologists to join our mission in delivering essential ecological monitoring programs.

The primary focus of this role involves conducting aquatic ecological surveys, identifying species, and analysing data to evaluate environmental changes. In addition, we provide support for incidents related to pollution, drought, and flooding. This position offers a diverse range of responsibilities, presenting numerous opportunities for professional development, supported by specialized training.

Key tasks include:
- Conducting ecological field surveys of aquatic plants, macroinvertebrates, algae, fish, and assessing freshwater habitats and water quality, which necessitates driving and working in and near water.
- In laboratory settings, you will analyse samples of aquatic macroinvertebrates to a mixed taxon level, with some identification at the species level, and recognize various types of algae.
- From an office environment, we monitor, record, and interpret our extensive data sets, producing persuasive reports to inform and influence stakeholders, thereby safeguarding the environment through advisory, regulatory, and enforcement actions.

Our work arrangements are flexible, allowing for remote work when applicable. We prioritize the development of our personnel, establish clear objectives, and maintain a commitment to an inclusive, safe, fair, and empowering workplace culture.

Everyone that joins us is required to undertake training and participate in incident response duties when the need to respond arises Having an incident role is an essential part of working for the Environment Agency and an active way to support communities and prevent harm to the environment. Further information on incident response can be found within your candidate pack.

The team

Our officers develop and schedule our monitoring programme, conduct surveys, analyse and report on quality-controlled data. We investigate environmental issues and our data underpins decision-making and delivering statutory responsibilities. Our induction, development and team-working will help you gain proficiency within the organisation and build on the strengths you bring to our team. Incident Response. All staff train to support our combined area response to a wide range of incidents including pollution, flooding, waste and drought.

Experience/skills required

- An ecological technical degree or sufficient relevant freshwater ecology experience will provide a strong base for this post.
- A foundation in freshwater species identification, microscopy, using dichotomous keys and familiarity with field survey methodologies for macroinvertebrates, plants, fish and habitat in freshwater would demonstrate potential for success in this role.
- Conducting ecological surveys and operating telemetry, populating databases, data interpretation and reporting are core work.
- Training is provided to achieve accreditation in river habitat survey, freshwater macroinvertebrate and plant identification as these capabilities are essential.
- Expected behaviours include self-development, initiative, organisation, focus on current priority, adaptability to changing directions, effective teamwork and supporting our response to incidents.
- Accessing River locations means a valid full driving licence; bankside mobility and working in water are genuine operational requirements.
