Summary
The Science, Technology, Research and Analysis (STAR) Group sits at the heart of the Home Office. The group ensures the best evidence and analysis are used to address the strategic issues facing the department. We also provide the science, technology, data, and international insights and collaboration capabilities to drive delivery.
As a Power BI Data Analyst in Performance Reporting & Analysis Unit (PRAU), you’ll play a key role in improving how Power BI is used across the Home Office by helping teams design clear, effective reports and dashboards. You’ll lead on best practice in report design and visualisation, supporting others to use Power BI confidently and get the most out of it. You’ll also help to drive adoption across the business by sharing your knowledge, staying up to date with new features, and encouraging teams to use the tool in the right way.
This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working with others, developing skills across a team, and making a real difference to how information is presented and understood. You’ll be part of a fast-paced, collaborative environment where your input will really count.
PRAU is part of the Home Office Analysis & Insight Directorate within STAR. We support Ministers, the Executive Committee, Policy and Operational leads and other analytical functions with the management information (MI) that they need, as well as producing data for publication and other forms of external release.
The Unit also provides advice and support to others in the Department on how to make best use of performance information and is leading on the transformation of MI systems and capabilities, using modern technologies and tools like Microsoft Power BI to improve the insight available. Our focus is providing reporting and analysis of performance relating to immigration and passports but there is a much broader demand across the Department for access to tooling such as Power BI.
You will be expected to use your expertise to work across a broad range of areas (e.g. Business Intelligence, Data Visualisation, Assurance and Quality), understanding, manipulating and accurately analysing data. You will apply tools and techniques for data analysis and data visualisation (including the use of Power BI and other tools). You will lead on supporting colleagues on how to provide insight, briefing internal and external audiences in ways that make complex data solutions – particularly visualisation of data – easy to understand for non-specialist audiences.
You may work on projects of high political exposure, value or complexity and you will engage with senior stakeholders, championing the value of data analysis and the adoption of tools like Microsoft Power BI for effective reporting.
You will be engaged with, and actively contribute to, the Data Analyst community and be comfortable with managing, mentoring and training junior / inexperienced staff particularly in Power BI approaches and best practice.
Key Responsibilities
Your main day-to-day responsibilities will be working alongside L&D and other colleagues to create, support and rollout an activity framework which uses your specialist skills to support the wider unit in upskilling in:

- identifying, collecting and migrating complex data to/from a range of systems, and delegating to their team where required
- summarising and presenting insights and dashboards to senior stakeholders, offering actionable recommendations to support decision-making, using a range of analytical techniques within Power BI, including DAX calculations, data mining, time series, forecasting and modelling techniques to identify and predict trends in a variety of complex data types
- working with stakeholders to gather requirements and deliver tailored Power BI solutions with oversight from Lead Data Analysts
- building capability and continually developing Power BI expertise and analysis skills, working alongside L&D colleagues to provide and support:
- mentoring
- training
- coaching, and
- supporting Data Analysts across the broader unit.
