We wish to appoint 5 x Clinical Fellow in General Surgery to start on Wednesday 6th August 2025.

This will consist of

These positions will rotate through Upper GI, Colorectal, Transplant and Vascular (they have yet to be decided) but will take place six months into rotation.

The post is based in the Brunel Building at Southmead Hospital, which is a state of the art Hospital facility which will be one of Europe’s leading hospital buildings.

The General Surgery Department delivers emergency and elective services at Southmead Hospital. The consultant surgeons provide a General Surgery service primarily but not exclusively to the Trust’s catchment population including a 24-hour continuous emergency service. Emergency vascular surgery is also undertaken in the Brunel Building and is the main hub for arterial work in the region.

The post-holder will be expected to provide supervision and support for more junior surgical trainees within his/her competence. Although the post does not have postgraduate approval for training, assessment of progression will be by continual assessment with use of PBA (procedure based assessment). The post-holder will be provided with formal documentation of their level of competence on completion of the post.

This post would be suitable for trainees considering a career in surgery prior to gaining core or specialty training or doctors who wish to gain formal training in Quality Improvement methodology. The post holder must have a minimum of 4 months experience in surgery.

Full Registration with the GMC is essential. The Trust has teaching status and is linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential.



North Bristol NHS Trust is the largest Trust in the Southwest region and one of the largest trusts in the country. We are one of the two designated Major Trauma Centres in the South West England, servicing the Severn region. In 2024, we had a total of 1723 trauma calls which were managed expertly by our hardworking on-call trauma teams.

The Trust has University Teaching status and is associated with both the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England.
