Summary

What skills and experience we're looking for

Due to an increase in demand for support for students struggling with emotionally based school non-attendance, the Wandsworth Hospital and Home Tuition Service (HHTS) now has an exciting opportunity for a suitably experienced teacher to join our creative, supportive, and enthusiastic team. The role is primarily an outreach role working with students who are experiencing significant challenges around attending their school due to emotionally based school non-attendance. The role is event linked for one year as part of the pilot in the first instance.

The successful candidate will become part of our highly collaborative and supportive hospital teaching team. There is a comprehensive training and induction package to support our new teachers in the role and further develop their professional expertise as specialists in mental health and hospital education. The successful candidate will work closely with the Headteacher and senior colleagues in the hospital team who have expertise in EBSNA identification, prevention, intervention and reintegration.

We are looking for a specialist SEN teacher or school leader who will bring enthusiasm and innovation to the role and will enjoy working collaboratively as part of our wider team. Knowledge of SEN, adaptive teaching and breadth of curriculum expertise are key. The role would suit a dynamic candidate who has had experience of advisory work and direct teaching and has a passion in reaching hard to reaching young people and communities. It would also suit a candidate who has experience of leading and developing initiatives to engage young people and is able to self-lead. The role will require liaison with multidisciplinary teams and school leaders and as such will require excellent communication skills.

EBSNA project

Supporting strategic work

• Implement EBSNA strategy alongside strategic implementation group.
• Lead the referral process for targeted EBSNA support and retain effective monitoring.
• Monitor attendance, SEND and engagement outcomes against identified KPIs alongside wider service strategic leads.
• Share appropriate summative information with governance bodies to align with local and national SEND, attendance and mental health priorities.

Direct work

• Developing a bespoke re-engagement plan for individual EBSNA cases with bespoke packages of home, community and school-based interventions integrating school staff as appropriate throughout the process.
• Deliver targeted support for individual EBSNA cases alongside school lead. Providing an educational package combining academic, social and emotional learning packages.
• Co-ordinate a multi-disciplinary team approach as appropriate for EBSNA cases from the targeted EBSNA team and wider LA services (see below). Ensuring CYP receives therapeutic provision in line with needs.
• Develop a family centred approach to support re-engagement in education through family relationships, school and wider professional network, utilising links with relevant services.

Project context

• The proposal is to run a pilot project for 1+1 year (reviewed in April 2026 to decide whether to continue for a second year) with an EBSNA Advisor who will provide a combination of strategic oversight and direct work with a cohort of CYP to re-engage them in education, prevent needs escalating and avoid EHCP being required.
• This Advisor will be hosted by the Home and Hospital Tuition Service (HHTS) supported by the Inclusion Service and will draw on a range of existing support within the local authority to provide a multi-agency response.
• The post will be supported by the equivalent of 1 day/ week advice and support from the Schools and Community Psychology Service (SCPS)
• They will report back to the existing strategic group and governance will be provided by the SEND scrutiny group.

Additional partnerships for the project

The project will also be supported by a youth support worker, Wandsworth Schools and Community Psychology Services and a number of mental health providers within the LA.

HHTS is a Hospital School and Medical Pupil Referral Unit that provides education for a diverse range of students aged 5-18 who are experiencing a severe or chronic illness and/or have mental health issues.

HHTS encompasses St George’s Hospital, CAMHS School, Community Education, Mental Health Outreach and Corner House; the National Deaf CAMHS inpatient unit.

The school has retained it’s 'Outstanding' OFSTED grading in 2023 and is a UNICEF Rights Respecting School with a strong focus on excellence and wellbeing for students and staff.

Our students have the opportunity to make accelerated progress through personalised learning programmes delivered in small groups or in one-to-one tuition. WHHTS is at the forefront of educational practice for students experiencing mental or physical ill health. We are committed to maximising access to education for children and young people who have medical needs or mental health issues that result in inpatient admissions or recurring absences from school.

Under the guidance of the senior leadership team, you will be required to organise, deliver and evaluate learning for inpatient children presenting with a range of educational needs; setting suitable targets and liaising with home schools. Part of the role will also require you to work in our home tuition sector, according to need.

Our well-resourced provision is staffed with highly qualified teachers and support staff, and you will work in partnership with the multidisciplinary team. You will be willing to work flexibly with vulnerable learners in a rewarding, supportive and creative environment. The successful candidate will be play a key role in leading a service with excellent practice and high-quality outcomes for the CYP. Class sizes are small with high staff to student ratios. Nursing staff are also in attendance to lessons to ensure care and education go hand in hand. All our teachers and HLTA’s have the opportunity to teach across the hospital sectors.

• experience of successful outcomes for pupils with SEN
• significant experience in schools and/or advisory support for schools and families

• the ability to deliver, and train others to deliver outstanding teaching and learning
• the ability to liaise effectively with stakeholders at a senior level (schools, health, other agencies and parents)
• Experience of working directly with students with mental health and SEN needs would be of added benefit.
