Summary

Job Description The purpose of this appointment is to increase the research and clinical capacity of airways disease and community respiratory medicine within the Division of Immunology, Immunity to Infection and Respiratory Medicine (DIIIRM) and the Respiratory Directorate of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. The applicant should demonstrate an outstanding publication record for their career stage and evidence of grant income relevant to airways disease research. Research Undertake research within the field of airways disease that is complementary to current research interests and is also consistent with the research strategy Maintain an appropriate research profile in terms of publication and as principal investigator/co-investigator on external grant applications Write and publish the results of original research in peer-reviewed high impact journals of international standing Develop a programme of externally funded biomedical research Contribute to the University of Manchesters research activity and in the pursuit of the Universitys research objectives Develop productive national and international research collaborations and partnerships Teaching and Learning Attract and supervise postgraduate research students at PhD/MD level Teaching at medical undergraduate level Promote excellence in learning and teaching Provide teaching and project supervision on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes relevant to DIIIRM Management Administrative responsibilities will consider the individuals workload in other areas and the need to gain this type of experience for promotion purposes. Typical duties may include: Attendance at Centre, Division and School meetings and participation in other committees and working groups in the Faculty and University, to which appointed or elected Participate as a full member of the Centre, School, and Faculty activities, including research meetings, away days Provide leadership, development, and career management for junior colleagues Clinical Provide senior clinical input into the Community Respiratory Team (CRT) across WTWA, which works at the interface of primary and secondary care via a multidisciplinary team (MDT) structure. The MDT consists of nurses, respiratory physiotherapists and doctors who diagnose and optimise management of patients with complex airways disease, quite often with a combination of COPD, asthma and bronchiectasis. The post holder will deliver an average of 1.5 clinics per week, a mixture of new and follow up patients. CRT clinics will consist of face-to-face reviews as well as remote MDTs with community practitioners (GPs, ACPs, community matrons, etc). It is an exciting opportunity to strengthen links between community practitioners and secondary care for patients with these conditions - to support and upskill our community colleagues and provide timely interventions in both acute and chronic respiratory disease management In addition, and as a member of our team, the postholder will contribute to the acute respiratory on call-rota (currently 1 in 20; no general medicine commitment), with a 1 in 14 commitment to consultant of the week for one of our respiratory wards. This includes ward A1 (28-beds) and F4/POU (22 beds), on a rotational basis. The postholder may also be asked to contribute one week per year to winter ward outlier cover subject to job planning As a major University Teaching Trust, there are opportunities to teach and supervise medical under-and post-graduates, and trainees To have the opportunity to participate as a member of the research team (sub- or principal investigator) in national and international trials (commercial and non-commercial) for patients with severe asthma/ asthma/ ILO/ BPD/ uncontrolled breathlessness, including research grants. To conduct/lead service evaluation/audit/quality improvement projects in the Airways team, ideally under The Integrated Research Application System (IRAS) Perform related clinical administration Participate in continuous professional development (CPD) Participate in clinical governance and clinical audit activities Participate in appropriate multidisciplinary team meetings Participate in Revalidation Person Specification Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Completed clinical training in respiratory and GIM and gained/near to gaining certificate of clinical training (CCT), or equivalent A PhD or MD in a relevant area, achieved or near to completion Demonstrates outstanding potential as a future international leader in respiratory disease research and clinical practice An established record of publication in peer-reviewed high-impact journals The ability/potential to undertake and direct relevant research at an international level Commitment to developing/maintaining a strong research profile in their field Experience of teaching and willingness to provide an appropriate level of undergraduate and postgraduate education Excellent project management skills, experience of supervision and management of research projects Excellent communication and organizational skills
