Exciting opportunity for a Qualified/Trainee Assistant practitioner in Mammography

We would like to hear from self-motivated, enthusiastic Assistant practitioners in Mammography whopossessexcellent communication and interpersonal skills to work within our busy BreastImaging Service. We would also consider a Trainee assistant practitioner for this role.


The successful applicant will be reliable, friendly, and hardworking with excellent organisational and communication skills. The ability to integrate well with the existing team and a genuine desire to contribute to service development and quality improvement is essential. Excellent concentration skills, attention to detail with the ability to empathise with and understand client/patient needs.


Bolton Breast Imaging is committed to providing high quality care for all clients/patients attending for Breast Imaging.  Imaging is undertaken for Bolton Breast Screening and Symptomatic Services, delivered at the basesite at Bolton Royal Hospital, and at our 3 satellite sites in Bolton centre, Radcliffe and Rochdale.

The service fully supports skill mix, with Consultant, Advanced, Enhanced and Assistant/Associate Practitioners. We are a progressive service and are supportive and actively promote continued professional development.

The role of an Assistant Practitioner in Mammography is to provide and maintain a high standard of mammography for all patients and clients attending for breast imaging. whilst working under direct and indirect supervision of a qualified senior radiographer. To undertake daily, weekly and monthly quality control tests in line with the department’s quality assurance programme and report any equipment malfunction or image deterioration promptly. Regular self-assessment and peer review of performance associated with service audit is integral to the role as is continual professional development (CPD). Assistant Practitioners may be required to provide chaperone duties during ultrasound examinations and assist consultants and Mammographers during assessment and symptomatic clinics in order to promote an efficient and caring service.

Situated in an ideal location close to all that Manchester has to offer with good transport links to M61 and M60 but also close to beautiful countryside.
• To perform all standard breast screening examinations to the highest standard with precision and speed in line with the NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) guidelines, and ensure that the client episode is documented and carried out in accordance with departmental protocol
• To perform screening mammography at the base unit and at satellite units within the Greater Manchester area.
• Use relevant knowledge, clinical experience and departmental protocols to select the appropriate mammographic projections and exposures to ensure optimum diagnostic imaging
• To perform family history mammography examinations to the highest possible standard, ensuring best practice, under the guidance and indirect supervision of a qualified mammographer.
• To ensure that all x-ray requests are checked by a qualified mammographer for justification before any procedure is carried out.
• To ensure that clients/patients are positively identified prior to mammographic procedures and that all relevant details, clinical history and current symptoms are correctly recorded in order to aid diagnosis.
• To technically evaluate mammography images to assess diagnostic quality and adequacy.
• To adhere to departmental protocols and procedures including Ionising Radiation Regulations (2017) and Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017.
• Actively participate and be responsible for equipment quality control and safety checks as defined in the departmental quality control manual, recording all test parameters and reporting any equipment faults and/or test results outside acceptable limits to the Quality Assurance (QA) Radiographer, Operational Lead Practitioner or Breast Imaging Manager, recording any action taken.
• Be proficient in assisting clinicians and mammographers during biopsy procedures using basic nursing techniques as required.
• Assist clinicians and mammographers during assessment and symptomatic clinics in order to promote an efficient and caring service.
• To chaperone and assist during Ultrasound sessions.
• Ensure biopsy samples are documented, correctly labelled, and sent to the appropriate designated area for transport to the laboratory.
• Ensure a high level of environmental quality is achieved by maintaining cleanliness and tidiness in all areas at all times whilst complying with infection control policies
• Assist with administration duties when required
• Ensure all areas are adequately stocked with linen and medical supplies, liaising with the appropriate staff members regarding stock control
• Adopt a flexible approach to periods of work to meet the needs of the service.
