Summary
We don’t just talk about diversity; we seek it, embrace it, and live it, for the benefit of our staff, our communities, and our environment. As an organisation we strive to reflect the communities we serve and continue to develop diversity throughout our workforce. We welcome applications from all backgrounds regardless of race, sexual orientation, or religion.
An opportunity has arisen for a River Temperature and Groundwater Officer based in our Lincolnshire & Northamptonshire Hydrometry & Telemetry (H&T) team, providing support to the Natural Capital Ecosystem Assessment (NCEA) project. We are looking for an individual with an understanding of the H&T network to assist in the planning, delivery process and installation of monitoring equipment across Lincolnshire & Northamptonshire. You may be required to travel outside this area as part of this role to support the roll out across England.
Key tasks:
• Assessment of hydrometric site suitability for sensor installation following NCEA programme guidance.
• Develop specifications of work and overseeing installation by internal/external contractors.
• Undertake routine maintenance and calibration of river temperature sensors.
• This role is a combination of field and office work therefore you must have a willingness to work outside, often in demanding weather conditions, all year round.
The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, well organised and be able to effectively communicate and influence stakeholders and partners. Able to work independently as well as part of a wider team is key to role.
Everyone that joins us is required to undertake training and participate in incident response duties when the need to respond arises, having an incident role is an essential part of working for the Environment Agency and is an active way to support communities and prevent harm to the environment. Further information on incident response can be found within your candidate pack.
The team
Our friendly team operates and installs hydrometric and telemetry assets and undertakes monitoring to ensure high quality data is available for customers 24/7. We work closely with colleagues in other teams, share knowledge freely, develop individual strengths and utilise the latest technological advances to ensure we are continuously improving our essential monitoring service.
Experience/skills required
As part of this role you will plan and schedule your own work and occasionally that of other team members and contractors. You will be contributing to the design and installation of groundwater and river temperature monitoring sites and an element of hands-on work in watercourses and at groundwater monitoring sites.
Essential skills:
• The ability to safely use hand and power tools to assist the installation of equipment.
• Planning and implementation of a programme of works.
• Willingness to work outside often in demanding weather conditions, all year round.
• Confidence working in and near water.
• Confidence driving in all weather conditions and to remote locations.
• Full UK driving licence.
Desirable skills:
• Experience of the construction, design and management (CDM) process would be an advantage.
• Experience of the installation of sensors and operation of telemetry systems would be advantageous as would be practical skills.
