You will play a key role in overseeing safe and efficient port operations, managing pier staff daily work routines, and ensuring compliance with all safety regulations, operational procedures, and legal requirements. You will be a visible and proactive leader, responsible for fostering a strong safety culture and leading by example in a fast-paced maritime environment under the spotlight of our local communities. This role demands strong leadership and team management skills, ensuring your team operates effectively while delivering high standards of service. You will need to be adaptable and forward-thinking, driving continuous improvement and change within the port environment.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead and manage on-duty Pier Masters across Kirkwall, Hatston, and Stromness piers.
• Champion safety by implementing and monitoring the Port Marine Safety Code, ISPS regulations, and emergency response procedures.
• Drive operational excellence, ensuring vessel arrivals and departures are coordinated efficiently and all harbour activities adhere to regulations.
• Support a high-performing team, providing guidance, mentorship, and oversight of daily operations to a well-established team.
• Manage change effectively, adapting to evolving industry standards and implementing operational improvements.
• Ensure compliance with environmental and pollution control measures. • Coordinate maintenance, ensuring infrastructure and equipment are safe and operational.
What We’re Looking For

• Proven experience in change management, with the ability to adapt processes and improve efficiency for the benefit of the service.
• A commitment to safety and compliance, ensuring high standards are maintained.
• The ability to work independently, making sound decisions under pressure.
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
• Competence in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel) and marine VHF radio operations.
Why Join Us?
• Work a structured 7 days on, 7 days off shift pattern with built-in leave.
• Be part of a forward-looking port authority that embraces growth and innovation.
• Benefit from ongoing professional development and training opportunities.
• Enjoy a competitive salary with shift allowances and location benefits.
You must hold STCW Officer of the Watch or a minimum of 3-years pier operations experience. Short range VHF Radio certificate of Competence or equivalent or be willing to obtain.
