A Vacancy at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.


The post holder will work closely with the MDT and St Georges University to deliver high quality learning experiences including lecture based teaching, observations in the clinical setting, reflection and discussion. They will be expected toprovide leadership to andwill work closely with staff in the WNRC to develop and expand the medical students learning opportunities and learning activities in the centre; promoting an emphasis on excellence in neurorehabilitation and neurorehabilitation teaching. The clinical nature of the work undertaken will depend upon the professional background of the post holder.

1) Medical student P Year Neurorehabilitation attachment:

· To discuss the structure and content of the placement with medical staff, therapists and nursing staff

·Weekly – to plan and implement the placement in a timely way – ensuring all materials are prepared

· Weekly – to prepare and carry out teaching / facilitation sessions – introduction to neurorehabilitation, facilitated case discussions

·Ongoing – to support patients to make informed decisions about participating in student teaching resources such as being videoed, responding flexibly to patients needs and wishes in relation to student teaching

·To liaise with medical school co-ordinators and respond flexibly to changes as necessary

2) Medical student P Year Neurorehabilitation attachment:

· To identify key areas of learning conjunction with the medical school and Consultant in Neurorehabilitation

· To work with the Consultant in Neurorehabilitation to develop learning materials

·To provide quality teaching and liaise with teaching clinicians in the centre to ensure that cover is provided for

· If preparing face to face lectures, to co-ordinate the preparation for the training including online resources and of the lecture space; including setting up chairs, audio visual equipment

· If preparing online teaching, to coordinate learning materials, to set up IT equipment, keep record of attendance.

Job Summary:

The Wolfson Neurorehabilitation Centre (WNRC) is part of St George’s Hospital Regional Neurosciences Centre. The WNRC provides intensive, goal focused neurorehabilitation for patients with acquired neurological conditions resulting in physical, cognitive and psychological disability. WNRC values training and education highly. Regular specialist teaching in neurorehabilitation is provided by the centre via external lecturing, training sessions and courses. The centre supports the learning of students and trainees in many disciplines throughout the year via clinical placements. A partnership between St George’s University Medical School and WNRC has been developed to provide medical students with an opportunity to access learning in the neurorehabilitation setting.



The post holder will work closely with the MDT and St Georges University to deliver high quality learning experiences including lecture-based teaching, observations of clinical setting, reflection and discussion. The post holder will work closely with staff in the WNRC to develop and expand learning opportunities and learning activities in the centre, promoting an emphasis on excellence in neurorehabilitation and neurorehabilitation teaching.

Teaching

· To provide teaching on a range of highly specialist areas including evidence-based neurorehabilitation, goal setting, use of scales and outcome measures, cognitive rehabilitation, complex disability management, discharge planning

· To plan and implement teaching sessions in collaboration with colleagues

Research and development

· To initiate and undertake Research / Clinical Governance / audit projects within area of expertise

· To identify opportunities for students to participate in centre-wide research and clinical governance/audit projects

· To facilitate and co-ordinate the collection of data for audit / research as required

· To develop and review strategies to support and expand student teaching in the centre

· To work towards developing integrated MDT student learning opportunities

· To develop and review strategies to expand leaning and development activity in the centre

· To identify and develop networks of staff who are interested in teaching and provide opportunities for staff to gain skills and achieve competencies in teaching

· To work with and share good practice with other teaching services including RHN in Putney

· To promote and support activity to develop the profile of WNRC as a specialist neurorehabilitation centre and student education provider

· To work with higher education institutions including St Georges University and professional bodies as appropriate.



KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS



Communication and relationship skills

· To communicate clearly and effectively verbally and in writing to patients, and with a wide range of healthcare professionals across multidisciplinary teams and external organisations

· To develop good working relations with colleagues across multidisciplinary teams and within external organisations

· To communicate information appropriate to undergraduate level students; where the information may be unfamiliar

· To deliver presentations to small and large groups of students and clinicians

· To employ excellent communication skills

· To demonstrate skills in motivating and enthusing students to engage fully in available learning opportunities

· To deal with initial complaints sensitively, to liaise with medical school to resolve / highlight issues impacting on student’s placement when necessary



Knowledge, training and experience

· To keep abreast of current standards of education, training and development practice issued by professional bodies including BSRM British Society of Rehabilitation Medicine

· To demonstrate knowledge of, and adhere to Professional and Clinical and National and Local Clinical Guidelines

· To keep abreast of all current and future developments in NHS and professional body guidelines

· To attend specialist short courses and advanced training in clinical specialist area

· To attend relevant courses, meetings and special interest groups/ clinical excellence networks

· To support and facilitate reflective practice and reflective learning; encouraging identification of individual’s own strengths and development needs

· To engage in reflection on training and development provision; co-ordinating feedback and adapt training to meet the needs of students, staff and the centre
