Summary
Gastroenterology and hepatology in Leeds is based at St Jamess University Hospital. We also provide outpatient services at Leeds General Infirmary and Wharfedale General Hospital. We are large yet cohesive departments. We provide care for all aspects of gastrointestinal and liver disease to a large local population and specialty services to the wider region. Our inpatient bed base is in the modern Bexley wing at SJUH. Our wards have excellent, well established teams of nursing staff and we are well supported by our experienced pharmacists, dieticians and radiologists. Our trainees gain valuable experience in managing patients with a range of conditions across our subspecialty services. These include IBD, enteral and parenteral nutrition (including home PN), general hepatology, liver transplant medicine, hepatic malignancy, small bowel disease and pancreaticobiliary medicine. There is a strong research background to the unit and close links with the Clinical Research Network. There are opportunities for fellows to work on our portfolio studies, with our research nurses, or develop their own audit or research project. We have a regular programme of departmental teaching and the post holder will be encouraged to participate in IMT teaching sessions. Candidates should hold a primary medical qualification and have a subsequent minimum of 2 years clinical experience. Evidence of achievement of foundation competencies is required. Candidates must hold a full Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council at the time of application. Candidates should hold a certificate in Advanced Life Support from the UK Resuscitation Council, or an equivalent. Please also refer to the person specification. The out of hours duties include clerking specialty admissions and providing the first tier of cover for ward patients. There is no general medicine rota commitment with this post. There is at least one registrar on-call at all times and the usual registrar cover is separate for gastroenterology and hepatology. The consultants operate a 24 hour on-call system and look after inpatients in 1 or 2 week blocks. The post-holder will be encouraged to complete an audit or quality improvement project. If desired there are opportunities to work with the Clinical Research Network team and particularly our research nurses, to contribute to existing clinical trials; training in good clinical practice and in trial recruitment is available. The post is offered for a fixed term of one year to provide a period of training, with the aim of providing experience in different areas of gastroenterology, the opportunity to develop a project and preparing the post-holder for further specialty training. The post-holder will be allocated an educational supervisor who will assess the following objectives mid-way and at the end of the post to check attainment: - Participate in junior out of hours rota developing confidence in dealing with acute admissions to gastroenterology and hepatology - Attend outpatient clinics - Complete an audit, research or quality improvement project
