Summary
The Trust was designated a Level 1 Trauma Centre in April 2011 in line with national recommendations for the planning and provision of care for seriously injured patients and went online as a Major trauma Centre in April 2012. The Centre for Defence Medicine is based within this Trust. Military casualties from abroad are airlifted to the unit once they have been stabilised and usually are under the care of the dedicated trauma teams. The Centre for Defence Medicine is fully integrated into the Trust and military personnel work in all departments, with emphasis on SAU and ITU. The on-call Consultant of the day is supported by resident specialist trainees in general surgery. There are separate middle grade on-call rotas for vascular, hepato-biliary and urology emergencies.
