Summary
We are looking to appoint a suitably experienced physician (ST3 level and above) to support ICU services at General Intensive Care Unit, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. The applicant must have previous experience in critical care medicine or anaesthetics and be competent in airway skills. You will be expected to work closely with their colleagues, the ICM or Anaesthetic Specialist Registrars and ACCPs to provide registrar level cover across the unit. Standard elements of ICM training:The successful candidate will join the middle grade rota for other Drs in training and have access to competency certification in the full range of General ICM clinical activities. This would be suitable for those training in ICM, in Anaesthetics or in similar specialities. The candidate must be able to manage an airway independently in emergency ICU clinical situations. CLINICAL AND RESEARCH (50:50):This post offers an opportunity to develop research skills with 50:50 clinical and research commitments. UHS has an expanding Research portfolio in Critical Care and Perioperative Medicine. These posts provide an opportunity for a Senior Fellow to pursue research projects at all levels including involvement in ongoing studies within the department or to pursue personal research interests. The successful candidate can make use of established datasets to explore their ideas. There are also opportunities to become NIHR associate principal investigator for several clinical trials in both critical care and perioperative medicine. A high-quality agenda is the priority, and research with publications in this area are strongly encouraged. Research mentoring, journal clubs and a program of research training seminars ensure that all Fellows will complete their program with new transferable skills. It is expected that you will contribute to the teaching and training programme on GICU. We will encourage and support fellows to present research findings and other novel work at local, regional, national and international meetings. UHS Critical Care department has an active multidisciplinary research programme. The academic department is led by Prof Mike Grocott, and includes two Professors and three Associate Professors. Recently completed and ongoing Master and PhD students have a broad focus including acute lung injury and surfactant metabolism, mechanistic understanding of hypoxia in the critically ill, interventions for the treatment and prevention of psychological trauma post critical illness, the oxygen demand of early rehabilitation and the acceptability of early rehabilitation interventions. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists). Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process. Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay) Basic Salary MT04 £61,825 Basic Salary MT05 £70,425 Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5; Have a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training Hold relevant higher specialty exam (e.g FRCP, FRCA, FRCS) A portfolio of evidence that demonstrates they meet the criteria for progression (in line with the Curriculum for the speciality similar to deanery trainee) Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role.
