Summary

A Vacancy at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust.

This 12 month (extendable) ACHD Clinical Fellow post in Cardiology is available at the Bristol Adult Congenital Heart Disease Unit, which is a specialised centre for adults with congenital heart disease within the Bristol Heart Institute (BHI). The BHI provides secondary and tertiary cardiac services in a purpose-built environment. We have 3 cardiology wards, 5 dedicated catheterisation labs, a full range of imaging facilities and full cardiac surgical programme. We provide congenital heart services for approximately 6 million people throughout the south-west of England with additional interventional services for south Wales.

Our team consists of 5 full-time ACHD Consultant Cardiologists and an additional Congenital Cardiologist with a mixed paediatric and adult practice. We have 4 congenital cardiac surgeons, a further 8 paediatric cardiologists, 4 specialist ACHD nurses, an MDT co-ordinator and full admin support. The unit is closely linked with adult cardiac services and the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. This post is a nationally recognised post for subspecialty training in adult congenital heart disease (ACHD). It is suitable for an existing specialty registrar who has completed ST3-ST5 cardiology training who wishes to specialize in the care of adult patients with congenital heart disease, or for an interested fellow with experience with cardiology care at registrar level and at least basic skills with echocardiography.

Skills in basic cardiac catheterisation are advantageous and in echocardiography are expected. Skills in transoesophageal echocardiography would be advantageous. There is work opportunity in the cath lab, in obstetric cardiology, in imaging and on the general cardiology specialty trainee on call rota. There are excellent opportunities for training and research.

Inpatients

The fellow would be expected to supervise the care of the cardiology inpatients on a rotational basis. There are 2 ward specialty doctors, 3 F1 doctors, 3 ST 1&2 trainees and clinical fellows who the post-holder would be expected to oversee. There is a daily board round which rotates around the registrars and regular ward rounds.

Outpatients

The trainee would be expected to carry out 2-3 clinics a week under the supervision of a consultant cardiologist, seeing patients with a spectrum of ACHD pathologies.

Cath Lab

The trainee would be expected to receive training in diagnostic congenital catheterisation and periprocedural transoesophageal echocardiography. Depending on the skills and interests of the successful candidate, more complex advanced training may be possible.
